It would depend how much leader you were running. I figure 6-7ft per color for the lead. Then you have to add the dive curve for the lure with the length of the leader. If you were running the flicker minnow with a 50′ mono leader to get to 25′ down you would need to let out about 45′ of lead.

for flicker minnow 7 30′ 10 XT dives 8 feet + 5 ft per color of 18 lb lead at 2.0 mph

for flicker minnow 9 30′ 10 XT dives 9 feet + 5 ft per color of 18 lb lead at 2.0 mph

for flicker minnow 11 30′ 10 XT dives 7′ + 5′ per color of 18 lb lead at 2.0 mph

for Deep Husky Jerk 30′ lead dives 9′ + 5′ per color of 18 lb lead at 2.0 mph

So a little off topic, I am no lead core expert, but do quite well, why do people run 30′ to 50′ leaders? I run a 10′ leader, makes it way simpler and works just fine, just wondering

You’re not alone on this. coffee

To the OP, your depth would also depend on if you were fishing a lake or a river with current.

That way if you have one crank out of tune it can tangle with the others ;)

    5-15′ for me.

LOL, that’s funny right there. I’m the same, 10′ or so just to KISS.

I run 30 foot leader because of the clear water on mille lacs so I was in my target depth though. Still learning thanks guys

A lot if guys like to run a leader long enough to keep the knot out of the guides while netting a fish. For the rivers, I doubt the longer leader makes a difference.

I know some people swear by the calculations, but i have found over time trial and error and record keeping have been best for me. i usually run out line till i am ticking bottom and then reel up till iknow longer am. i then write down the amount of line out and leader length and lure. I am able to adjust from there.

Then again I have never targeted suspended fish with lead yet

IMO the snarky replies, mine included, were nothing against you since you’re asking honest, sincere questions.

I’ve just never found the need to run super long leaders, even on ML. On a similar note, while some on ML will swear by 8′-12′ or longer snells while rigging up there, I’ve never found to need more than 6′.

It’s personal preference on leader length but for me, having a long leader is just more math for me to do in the boat and I want to KISS. Hope this helps, good luck.

Thank you guys I need to switch rest my Rigs to the same line as one has tuff-line leadcore and other too is Woodstock which I believe different depth it goes. Do any of you have experience with the 832 lead is it with the extra $10

I think they’re less line and rigging shy that we often speculate.

Just watch some underwater footage. Here’s an example.

You should figure 5ft per color at 2 mph. Faster will be less dive slower more. Then figure depth of crank dive at the length of leader you have. 832 suffix will dive 6-7 ft. Per color. Lead is very speed dependent. I run 10ft leader in the river and 20-25 in clear lakes. Not sure if it matters but if it gets me one more bite worth it. I run 832 it nice. But do it because I want the extra depth for salmon when I go. If you use it you need to use a tiny barrel swivel to tie between leaders or it will twist. It isn’t as tough if you pound bottomalot s the lead is smaller and will poke through easier.

what Justin riegel says, all the calculations are guidelines, variables do exsist, is your reel calibrated right? speed? Let your line out till it ticks bottom, wind in a few cranks, and take note, catch fish? repeat it. Now suspended fish? different ball game
