I am looking to get a couple trolling rod and reel combos for pulling lead core with crankbaits. I have never pulled lead core so don’t know much about it yet. Not looking to spend a ton of money probably $100-120 each or less. Any crankbait recommendations would be appreciated too. Every year on my local Lake I mark large fish suspended 30-35′ down over 45-60′ of water. I have heard a guy does really well with lead core and crankbaits so I want to try it.

If you are just starting out, you can get into it pretty reasonably. When I started I just bought cabelas rod and line counter reels. They would go on sale a few times a year and you could get the combo for $50. Last I heard they are about $65-70 now on sale, but they work fine for what you pay for them. Everyone has a different preferences, but I always bought the 8’6″ telescopic planer board rods. As for cranks the tail dancers are good. I had good luck with the scatter tail dancers this last year. Other go to’s for me are flicker shads, shad raps, smash shads, and the original floater is hard to beat on many days too.

Glad you asked this Brad. I’m planning to attempt Lead Core this summer. I did purchase a large $30 baitcaster but haven’t found a good pole for it yet.

What I know is this… Leadcore does not give. AT ALL… So you have to spin a few yards of mono on the reel and then add your leadcore. Then put 6 feet or so of mono on the end of the leadcore for your crankbait. I also read that an 8′ medium action pole helps to absorb some of the shock too…

But I hope the guys here with the experience share what they know…

Where are you located? I have 2 lead core setup’s that I don’t use I would sell you for $120 for both of them. I would have to double check the rod/reel brand, but they work well and are spooled w/ Sufix 832 18# lead. The few times I run lead, I am fishing in my buddies boats who have setups so they really don’t get used. If you decide to buy new, getting a line counting bait caster is a must FYI.

As for lures I like to run Rapala SR 5’s, Flicker Shads, and Salmo hornets.
