Looks like some buck are still holding as of very late February, but some are dropping in early March. They don’t seem to mind that I have mowed the beans. Even the Pheasant made it thru winter in good shape.

Wife said she saw a pretty nice buck yesterday near the Bowlus area. When I asked how she knew it was a buck she responded, “Because it had antlers.” March 12th seems late, but the daughter confirmed it.
March 13, 2017 at 8:19 am #1680750still seeing bucks here in the metro with racks. One I saw Saturday was pushing 150 to 160.
March 13, 2017 at 9:39 am #1680766Is that Big 10 or Tank on 2/27? He looks like he’s in good shape for this time of the year.
The pheasant looks good too. Any hen companions for him or is he the loneliest rooster in MN?
The bucks seem to have moved off of my property for the winter. Only pictures of does so far.

Nope, neither, these are pics from the plots at home. I have a couple pics of him thru the fall/winter, but very sparatic. He just wonders thru every once in a while.
The rooster has been around all winter all by himself. Hopefully a couple hens show up this spring.
March 13, 2017 at 10:30 am #1680782That is so odd.
Every buck near me lost their antlers easily by Feb. 1st this year.
1 of the bigger ones already has new velvet spikes popping when I saw it this weekend. Bout an inch but huge deer and close enuf to see it was thick and in velvet.I’ve never seen one in velvet this early.
So I’m thinking that’s a good thing.
If they are already sprouting new antlers, it’s that much time for them to grow right?Thoughts on that?
March 13, 2017 at 11:25 am #1680807WOW, putting on new antlers already. That is very early from my experience. Sure, the longer they have to grow the better!! You are going to have 200″ deer all over the place
March 13, 2017 at 11:54 am #1680818I pulled my camera a week ago. These are the last pics I have with antlers

March 13, 2017 at 1:14 pm #1680851200″ deer all over the place! That would definitely be a 1st for me!
But I’ll take it!.Seeing Outdraft’s pic with those 2 doofs fighting yet in February…I saw this a lot this year. They were banging heads right up to the time they lost them.
That’s something else I can’t say I’ve seen before. Bucks bumping uglies in the dead of winter. Must mean they were healthy enough to fight!March 14, 2017 at 9:44 am #1681056When I read the post about antlers growing already I couldn’t believe it. Sure enough while driving home from my hike last night there were 3 bucks in a picked corn field, and one you could see had velvet covered bumps on it’s head.
On a side not I jumped two bucks last Saturday one was still carrying both sides, and the other one was still holding onto one. The deer just seem to be confused this year!
March 14, 2017 at 11:31 am #1681104Poor rooster. All by himself. He needs some nice hens to keep him company.
I’d love to know where the bucks around my property head to. I’ve long suspected they go over near the cattle on the adjacent property where they feed silage. I’m sure that’s better food and with all the activity it’s probably safer from predators, but it’d be nice to see them and know how they’re doing.
In the last card pull from the camera I leave out all winter, I seem to notice that some of the mature does are a bit rounder in the belly. Will be interested to pull the card this weekend and see if things appear to be progressing.
I have 4 mature does that have been producing between 2 and 4 seasons, 2 of them have managed to produce twins and get them through the first winter on several occasions. Last year I had 2 resident does produce twins and then another doe with twins moved in when the plots matured in the fall.
Hopefully with this mild winter, this will be another banner year for does giving birth to twins.
