Late November clover

One would think by this time of year in MN that the deer would be done with clover and moving to grains and standing corn. Not quite the case at our farm. The weather has been pretty warm for MN November, but even with snow on the ground they continue to pound on this clover plot. This scene was pretty consistent all last week. I just need big John to come looking for the last doe in estrus.

I sat all Weekend over a 1/2 Soybean and half Corn food plot. Only saw 1 small doe all weekend. I think this warm weather has them feeding very little and what feeding they are doing is really late. As nice as its been hunting in these warmer temps. I hope it cools off some these next 2 weekend. It would be nice to have the deer start feeding a little more and earlier. The area I hunting also has a HUGE coyote problem. The one doe that did come out to feed was rather nervous and keep her head on a swivel the whole time. I had hoped there was a buck trailing behind, but in the 20 minutes or so that she feed he never appeared. Shortly after Dark the Coyotes started howling REAL close. Needless to say the primer stayed in for the walk back to the house.

Totally agree. My 3-4 acres worth of clover plots are absolutely down to the dirt. I only had about 1 week of significant snow cover and that all melted 2 weeks ago, so anything that was left got cleaned up in both plots. They’ve hit it so hard they even ate the sedge grass clumps and tall weeds in the oldest part of the plot.

Good clover cannot be beaten for an all-around plot. It’s less labor and input intensive, lasts for years, and it may be sooner or it may be later, but the deer WILL eat clover in all seasons.
