I know most have put their ice fishing gear away until next season, but for those who still have safe ice, here’s some motivation to get out and fish it. I had a day similar to this last year around the same time. It was cold with a constant snappy breeze. My holes were freezing over and it was a long walk in, which made the day all the more worth it. There were a ton of 5″ crappies surrounding the hole I was fishing the edges of and they were quite aggressive. Because of those future slabs I didn’t go more than 15 minutes without catching a fish and that was on my lunch break! It was a day where everything was hungry, but they were picky at the same time. An orange 1/8oz flash champ started the day off with a few 13″ slabs and several 11’s and 12’s, it also worked up a few dozen walleye and pike that were roaming under the schools! around 1 o’clock the spoon was done and it was Tungsten time, I slipped a red mustache worm on the jig and tipped it with a waxie occasionally. Perch, gills, crappies, walleye, pike and rock bass were all in favor of the offering and my noodle spent more time doubled over than it did straightend out! There weren’t any giants to speak of outside of one gill just shy of 11″, but the constant action and a good pile of fish for tomorrow’s fish fry had me content. I imagine I will likely be fishing that spot out of my canoe in a few weeks, so I am really glad I walked out to get a few on the ice!
