Well, last week found me at my mother-in-law’s in west central MN. The previous days has seen some downpours followed by wicked wind, but when I woke up on Tuesday morning, the sun was shining, the winds were calm, and the temperatures were pleasant. At that point, I was thankful that I had thrown a shotgun and some gear in the truck before we’d left.

I didn’t have any good intel, so I just picked a random, nearby WMA and took off for a few hours. I was hunting solo without a dog, so my expectations were low. It turned out that my expectations were spot-on. I didn’t see much for any signs of life. I ended up a bit wet, as the cattails that I found were not locked up as tight as I’d hoped, but it was a beautiful morning to spend some time soaking in some me time and enjoying the solitude. There’s always next season!

    Nice report.

Late season can be tough, but that’s the risk part. The reward is that occasionally you hit the mother lode of bunched up birds.

It’s hard to pass up beautiful, sunny winter days in late hunting season. Even if it just ends up being a nice walk in the great outdoors. That’s pretty much what Billy, the boys, and I did over New Year’s weekend. We went up to the shack for some grouse hunting. Jumped two but didn’t get any. It was chilly but absolutely beautiful outside and the sun felt good!

Fritz and Remi slept all evening and were still sleepy the next morning from all the fun romping around in that snow. It wasn’t the easiest walk through the crunchy snow. Sometimes you’d stay on top and sometimes you’d sink through a little. It was a great workout!
