I am heading up to Mille Lacs tomorrow to do some walleye fishing over the weekend and am looking for any last minute tips (ex: color, techniques, etc)!

First time going up there so any advice is appreciated!

Staying at the Grand Casino so we can have stuff to do when we’re not on the ice but we’re open to driving around the lake to get to any launch!

With the cold weather and several fronts coming through the fishing has slowed from what it was like at the end of December.

There is still a pretty decent morning/evening bite along the shoreline breaks going on the shallow structure as long as you can get away from people fishing rocks in 12-20′ of water and sand/gravel in 28-25″ have been pretty good. During the day you’ll want to head to deeper (25-20′) sand/gravel. The morning evening window on shallower structure is your best bet at finding keepers, but if you want more action and numbers of fish I would head out to the flats.

On the flats the morning/evening bite has been best on the top edge in 22-25′ with the fish sliding down to the bottom edge during the day. It’s pretty common to catch 20+ fish but mostly smaller ones with an occasional bigger eye or jumbo perch mixed in throughout the day. Tons and tons of tullibee roaming near just about every flat as well.

For accessing the lake even with almost no snow I would recommend going through a resort instead of a public access. The $10 road pass fee is worth every penny knowing that they have been monitoring any near shore cracks to keep you safe and sound. Terry’s is close to the casino but I’m not positive if they have a road to the flats yet. If not head to Garrison Sports, Myr Mar, or Red Door on the North.

Glow colors are working great in low light conditions and cloudy days with gold being the best color if the sun is high.

Hi Ryan, just wondering how you did. We were up out of Brandt’s all weekend long and caught probably 30 walleyes. Unfortunately they were all 12-15″ in size. Good sign for the lake but couldn’t sink into the big ones. Fished 5 mile gravel then jumped around all afternoon made it out to the July (Highway) bar and did some poking around in between. Did see some perch on the camera in the deep at one point but couldn’t get them to commit. Lots of fish but nothing of size made for sort of a frustrating weekend in the cold!
