My cousin was out on Yellow Lake in Webster, his buddy caught a pike on a tip-up and this was attached.
How did a Lamprey get in there?

Are they in the st.croix up there? Could be from there. No clue how they would get around the dam though.

We got nasty squirmy little lampreys naturally up here. In West Central MN we have chestnut lampreys they are yellow and spotted.

It looks like a Chestnut or Silver Lamprey, which are native. I caught a small mouth on the upper Croix with one attached before.

They need current to breed (Yellow River runs through both lakes and is tied to the Croix)

They got in most recently after our last ice age, but they’ve been on earth since before dinosaurs.

There’s a few native species in MN. That looks like a chestnut as previously stated. Its not a sea lamprey so just leave it be.

I have caught a few fish out of the Mississippi with them attached.

Yup, native. Not a Sea Lamprey – Have seen them occasionally on the Croix, and if you’re sturgeon fishing the Rainy, it’s about a 50% chance you’ll have to figure out how to get one of those things out of your boat if you land a sturgeon – they’re dang near impossible to grab. It’s a theory that Sturgeon jump so much because they’re trying to shed lampreys.

I’ve caught fish with them since the 70’s in that area, Clam Lake just SE of Yellow. Clam is also a St. Croix tributary.
