I had a little free time Friday morning so hit the lake to do some more playing around with the new I-pilot and check out the recent software update I installed on my Lowrance HDS units. Hadn’t intended to really do much fishing as I wanted some more time playing with the I-pilot. Don’t know about anyone else, but if I have rods in the boat, I have a really hard time not fishing. I need to leave all my rods at home when my plan is to do something other than fish.

I decided I was going to just check out one of my favorite post spawn spots to see if any fish were making their way back to the lake. Tied on a BFT draggin jig and a BFT Moxie in pro-blue and decided to make one drag and then play with the i-pilot. I made it maybe 30 yards and got smoked by a very healthy 23″ post spawn female walleye. So much for playing with the i-pilot. I spent my few hours I had dragging plastics and crawlers. I caught fish on most every color I tried, but pro-blue and oystershell were the best two. I caught around a dozen 13 to 15 inch fish and one 18 inch fish. Nothing more over 20, but it was fun action for sure. I did see one other nice slot fish caught and one or two keepers from the other boat working the same area.

My prediction is that by this time next week, the post spawn bite should be picking up pretty good. I think the fish that spawned first are just starting to return to the lake, but I’m guessing the vast majority of fish are still up in the river.

Nice work. I bet that Ipilot makes draggin a simple affair. Pro blue has long been one of my favorite colors.

To be honest, the I-pilot remote never made it out of the glove box. I did make good use of the auto pilot. The ability to not have to keep my foot on the pedal is a sure bonus. I needed to tie on a new jig, pointed it into the current and turned on auto pilot. By the time I got my jig tied on, I was back to the start of my run. I’m going to like that feature.

I really struggled giving up my Maxxum for the Terrova with I-Pilot if it wasn`t for the spot lock I don`t think I would of made the switch. After using it a few times I am slowly adjusting, can`t get used to having to constantly look at the head to see where it is pointing.

My biggest adjustment has been getting used to the delay in steering, as well as having to look at the head to see where I’m going. With my old cable steer, I could just do it by feel and the steering control was instant. I’m going to miss that, but I guess you can’t have everything at the same time.

I have that same issue with watching were my PD is pointing. It is especially hard when I have someone blocking my view of it. that is one of the reason’s I like to fish by myself on occaision. Makes boat control much easier. For me, I try to get that thing pointed as straight as possible and use my tiller to steer with.
