Lakes around Leech Lake.

We will be staying on Leech, August 11-18. This will be our first open water trip to the area. I’ve been doing some research on surrounding lakes, in case the wind keeps us off the big lake. I don’t mind driving a bit for quality fishing. I’ve got three kids and a wife who love to catch fish, no matter the species. The DNR’s Lakefinder page is pretty awesome, but with the number of lakes in the area, it still can be a little overwhelming.

On paper it appears Bass Lake, near Cohasset, would be a good place to get on some nice gills? The most recent survey was done in ’14. I would think with the 5 panfish limit, there would still be a healthy population of nice sized fish? We’re not interested in taking any trophy gills home, I realize what a special resource those big gills and crappie are, we just want to experience those fish in a size we can’t find around home.

Gull Lake, near Tenstrike, would be about an hour and fifteen minute drive, but the latest survey there also looks good.

I’ve also been told Horseshoe by Backus has a decent number of eater walleye, and good numbers of smaller gills.

I was just wondering if I was looking in the right directions? This will be more of a family vacation than a fishing trip, but on the days we spend most of our time fishing, I’d like to be able to take advantage of what the area has to offer.

    Thanks for your time.

What part of Leech are you staying on? There’s awesome little lakes all around it, so I’d look at ones close to where you’re staying. It’s a long drive from Federal Dam to the little lakes SW of Walker for example…

Guess I should’ve included that! We’re staying on Pine Point.

Look at the longville area. Woman, little boy, boy, etc. 30 minute drive from pine point. All great lakes for bass, panfish, pike, walleye, Muskie. Whatever you want to chase they have it.

Yes, Little Boy and Wabedo…both good for surprise big gamefish. Panfish not so much but the channel between the two, the little pond back there will get you some decent one’s for a nice fish fry.

Thanks, fellas. If we come off the big lake I’ll definitely give those two a shot.

I was on Boy the second week of July and did very well on some average crappie and huge sunfish, and picked up a few walleye mixed in.
