I am looking to replace a 7 year old Bird Helix with a new Gen 4 Helix10 SI unit. Do I need to buy a newer version of the Minnesota Lakemaster chip to get the most out a new unit?

Are you required to? No, your old chip will still work. But to stay current with the newest contour maps, yes you want to upgrade as new versions come out.
Minnesota VX is the newest tech and was just released this spring. Works with gen 3 and newer. Otherwise v9 is the newest for the “old” chips.
