I just moved to the Chippewa Falls area and everyone keeps talking about how good ice fishing is on Lake Wissota. I’d like to get on some Walleye and Crappie, but have no clue on where to start. Any help would be appreciated.

    Nick,

Wissota can be tough to figure out, Little lake is a good area for Crappies and Eyes. Yellow River section is also good. Fish the old River bed and cribs in the yellow river section. Also cribs in the little lake. The main lake is normally very iffy driving on and I only like taking my Wheeler on it or actually any other part of the lake.

If you ever want to get together let me know. There are a lot of other really good lakes in the area as well.

Here is a link to some really nice contour maps that show crib locations.

Thanks for the help. I’ll definitely be in touch. What other lakes would be worth giving a shot in the Chippewa Falls area?

Icenutz hit it on the head. It can be a tough lake but those areas are the ones to concentrate on if you are going to fish it. When I used to work on the like I fished it a lot more and put a lot of time in on it, and most days weren’t very good. I have had a few decent days out there and caught some really nice crappies in the past but it has been a few years sense I fished it. I usually stay a little north of there on some of the other lakes but Wissota has some really good fish in it. Good luck if you get out there and feel free to ask if you want some other ideas of lakes to try.

A nice first ice lake is Glen Loch just north of the leinies brewery. Popple is another good gil lake ice and open water. On the chippewa river the dells pond in eau claire is a walleye / crappie haven. North of Wissotta is another chippewa river flowage called Old Abe, walleyes crappy a plenty. If you head up into the kettle moraine thrre are tons of kettle lakes to explore.

Are you talking Dells Pond for ice fishing? I live less than 5 minutes from Dells and don’t think I have seen many people ice fish it

Its not easy accessing dells pond or old abe for ice fishing . You will have to work for it, be carefull and smart but they are doable. I was giving year round fishing advice as well as ice fishing since there were multiple questions. As far as Old Abe, I used the landing above the Wissota dam. The other public landing is about 8 miles north at a little park. They are easy to find. I never ice fished Old Abe but I have Dells Pond many times. Its fickle, some years were great other years was slow. If you want ice serenity in the middle of the city Dells Pond is it. Most people are afraid and/or lazy to work for there ice fishing.

when the ice goes away and you venture out on the water make sure you know where Larson’s (think that’s the name) point is, many a prop have been lost there

Holcombe Flowage is a nice body of water to fish to the north

There are also back water areas on the Chippewa river to the south of EC that are good, but I will not mention those on a public forum. Big Pike is right Dells can be good but be careful, you will have a bit of a hike to get to good spots.

Altoona Lake and Lake Eau Claire get a lot of pressure but both hold a good population of Gills and Crappies.

Another great open water spot is just below the wissota lake dam. The landing is off of pump house road. Take the river carefully up to the left. Drift from the Y down. Cats, walleye, crappy, perch, smallys and musky. Bring lots of spare jigs….

Thanks Bigpike and IceNutz for not discussing those in the open. Also Please take Ice up on his offer to go out and fish. He’s a wealth of knowledge even just talking on here. Bring some extra cash and grab a few of his tip downs. I rarely touch my rods crappie fishing now due to him and using his tip downs. Also don’t be afraid to try prairie lake up by Chetek. We did great there last year. And I’ll second the Kettle lakes up by New Auburn. If you like hole hopping these are great to try and get fish on.

It’s honestly the worst fishing lake I have ever been on. I can’t blame you for trying though!

If your available next weekend me and some buddies are coming over there from Green Bay in search of these jumbo perch on the chip. We’re kind of going out there blind and any information on some starting points where to fish around the backwaters would be greatly appreciated.

Hey guys me and a few of my friends are heading over to lake Wissota for walleyes at night next weekend. We live in Green Bay so we’re kind of going out there blind. During the day however we’re going to be in search of jumbo perch on the chip backwaters. Not asking for any GPS coordinates or anything like that but any help would be greatly appreciated on where would be a good starting point on where to find some big perch. Or if someone would like to even come fish with us that would be awesome.

I can steer you towards walters however, and you might get a few after dark but its last and first light mostly.
