Lake Winnipeg rod selection

I am planning on going to lake Winnipeg some time next year and was wondering what people are using for rods up there. I’m kind of thinking of getting either both jt blackouts or tucr admiral and precision. Also what reels do you guys like to pair up with these rods.

I don’t think I’d go with the Admiral. I have two commanders and they worked perfectly up there for me last year. I run them with Pflueger supremes 1000’s.

I was thinking the admiral because I love fishing #7 and #9 jigging raps and the commander said up to 1/2 oz on the site.

I run a TUCR Power Precision, Thorne Bros walleye sweetheart, and a couple different scheels models in MH. One is 36″ one is 42″.

Don’t be afraid to use a heavy rod if you’re using heavy baits. I used a LTP when I was up there and was prett happy with it when using a live target. A little on the heavy side, but I wasn’t about to buy new rods for one trip.

I don’t have anything I would trust to catch 8lb eyes all day with and the worst thing that happens on a fishing trip is equipment failure. I have been thinking about getting a few custom rods anyway so why not make sure I am well equipped for my first trip to canada.

The Commander handles the #7’s with no problem (fish them quite a bit up there last year) and handles both sizes of the live targets no problem. And you’ll be able to use it for lures you typically use during the winter. I have no doubt the admiral would work, but unless you fish a lot of lake trout during the year, you won’t have much use for it other than that trip.

I’d suggest just calling the Tuned Up guys and ask for their opinion as I believe they designed the Commander as a rod for guys fishing Winnipeg and those lures.

Probably the best reason of all to get an Admiral. The only trip I like better than Winnipeg is Lake Superior for lake trout. grin

I have a couple of the NOS Scheels rods and have really liked them. I didn’t want to go spend a lot of money on new rods and reels that would be specifically used for only Winnipeg. I have about $150-$200 in rods then I just use my Shimano Siennas that I already have on my other rods and put new line on them and I am ready to go. If the Commanders would also work for walleye fishing around your home lakes then that would be a sweet set up too. If you wanted to spend more on rods and save a little on reels you could use some of the reels you already have on other rods or I have used my summer time Pflueger Presidents reels on my Winnipeg rods before. I am heading up there Feb. 9th-12th!

I have 2 38″ TUCR Commanders that I bought specifically for lake Winnipeg. I had the same question if I should go Admiral vs Commander. A few guys I know that are sponsored by them that fish Winnipeg said hands down the Commander is the way to go. I have them out on Mille Lacs and they handle those #7’s just fine. This rod is the winnipeg special as I call it.

You don’t need to spend a lot. The new quantums or the rapala r type in mh are great rods for the lake.

Another vote for the commander, rod is as good as it gets in a walleye rod for me. Ill even fish it down to 1/8oz spoons
