Has anyone been up to Lake Winnipeg in the last week? I’m heading up on Friday 3/18, and have never been there before. Wondering if we’ll need planking to cross cracks, or what the ice conditions are for heaves and cracks.

Check out the “lake winnipeg ice fishing” FB page. They give lots of ice condition reports. I was there last weeekend. Prudens will be done for by now. Trucks are most likely a no go. Probably same for sleds if your worried about the slides as most snow is gone or leaving. UTV’s will be the best bet, tracked or not.

I learned the hard way a couple years ago. Bring everything you think you would ever need. Straps, planks, whatever. Then bring extra. be thankful if you never have to use them, but come prepared regardless.

Thanks for the info. We’ll be going out of Chalet Beach access. I heard there was little to no snow, so I’m not to worried about that. More concerned about the heaves and crossing cracks.

One more question….what size planks would you recommend? 2×10, 2×12? Is 8′ long enough for most cracks? I know the conditions change frequently.

I was up last weekend as well and would be surprised if you’ll be able to safely access the lake. We went out of Patricia beach. There was a 20′ snow drift to climb there that got super slushy. There was also a crack that seemed to change every day.

Not sure what to tell ya though. If you’ve never been there, it might not be a great time for a first go at it.

We just got 6 inches of snow. Colder temps too. Balsom closed back up, trucks are back out again. The bite is on fire!

8′ foot is lots. Most times you can find a spot to cross along the ridges. On Sunday, the spot I crossed at had opened up 5 feet. the walleye club from Fargo and our club are doing the annual fishing weekend. There will be lots of people out. Message me if you need any info.

Chalet is good. Still lots of surface water. Don’t leave any gear in sight in your truck. Thieves are around.

Hopefully the water will freeze with the colder temps this weekend.
Thanks again for the heads up on the theft. I heard about that a couple weeks ago.
