Anybody out there have any experience with whitefish netting? I’m going to try it this year for the first time. From what I can gather, there’s not a lot of info out there. Seems like trapping and wild rice gathering, in that participation is steadily decreasing over time because of the “apprentice” factor. Would appreciate any general info that would be helpful. I’m not asking for your spots; I already know where I’m going. Thanks in advance!

I’d contact the DNR and tell them what you want to do. Ask them if they have any sources you can contact regarding the actual netting. Honestly I am not sure running nets in just any water is legal without a commercial /netting fishing permit. Lake Superior has a few netters seeking herring and whitefish but they are all commercially licensed.

No, you cannot put nets in just any water. I found the netting regs (not that well-publicized) and I’m familiar with all of that. Personal use permit is $10 I think. I did call somebody at the Finland fisheries office the other day to ask about the specific lakes I’m going to target. Just looking for someone experienced who feels comfortable sharing some tips.
