I have always wanted to try Vermilion for ice fishing instead of the Lotw,Red, Winnie etc.I took my youngest up for 3 nights this past weekend and had a blast! Alot of smaller eyes but did scratch out our limit of 14″ to 16″ eaters along with some nice jumbos and decent northern to boot. He’s already asking when we can go back next year! It easy fun to switch it up and try something out of the norm, plus it’s plain gorgeous there.

Vermillion is an awesome and overlooked destination in the winter. Went up this year and last year and had my best fishing of both years on Vermillion and the smaller lakes close to it. It is also a shorter drive from the cities than a lot of places. Glad you had a blast. Lots of eater walleye, and huge perch and I have had good luck with bigger walleye as well. This year I was hole hopping outside and looked to my left and not 100 feet away were two wolves looking at me. They both took off and I watched them run around the lake for about 15 minutes. Were you fishing out of Mckinley I’m guessing?

The snow was all packed and could drive pretty much anywhere with a truck. They did get 5-7″ on Monday when we left however.

My favorite fishery of all times. I don’t do lotw any more. To many better places to go that are closer. Vermillion is just plain beautiful. We found monster crappies last time as a bonus as well

It’s pretty rare to get the conditions they had up there for most of this year. The reason it does not get much pressure during the winter is simply that most of the lake is not accessible without a sled. Last year there was 13 inches of snow and an extra 5 inches of slush in some places.

We were in Black duck bay out by Shamrocks Landing.. There is a guy plowing a road/spots out that area starting this year.

We fish out of mickinley 90 percent of the time. I used the boat access at shamrock last year and caught a huge pike right in the shallows

That is so cool. A rare sight indeed.

I’ve used Shamrock in the summer I will have to check it out if I make it up next weekend. Didn’t know they were plowing out of there now. I’ve had my best luck in deep water 29-32 feet off of humps out there, You get a lot of daytime action which makes it fun.

Vermillion always has good day time action. And when you find crappies they are a awesome bonus

A big crappie way up there is an old fish, pulled out of deep water is a dead fish,
Bear knows his stuff, just sayin’—you can catch them deep but whatever you catch you keep. Beautiful lake, one of the few that I would buy a cabin on, because of its diversity and like I said its beauty, you would never get bored out there. Some of those up north lakes the locals would be more likely to tell you about a good walleye spot before they would tell you about a crappie spot.
