Was looking at the DNR info on Lake Vermilion and I see there is no Lake Trout in the lake.
Was wondering what lakes close by the State Park might have Lake Trout?
Thanks for any suggestions!

I was wondering the same thing. The DNR does have a lake trout lakes list: http://dnr.state.mn.us/fishing/trout_lakes/list.html
Most of the lakes seem to be in the BWCA. However, I did notice a couple lakes in the Brainerd area are or were stocked with lake trout.
There are several lake around Ely that have Lake Trout. Burntside and Snowbank are the most popular. Trout Lake is also a very good option. It is connected to Lake Vermilion and there is a portage in which you can take boats (BWCA restrictions) into the lake.
Here’s the Skinny on the trout lakes up here. I don’t know when you’re planning to fish for Lakers, but at the moment they are in a closed season. (Open water season goes from walleye opener to Sept 30)
Trout Lake is good for Lakers. As mentioned, you do need a quota sanctioned permit for day use motor or overnight from May 1- Sept 30 and the lake has a 25hp or less limit. Getting a permit for Trout Lake day of is usually not very difficult as it is not nearly as coveted as Basswood or Fall Lake for motor travel.
If you’re looking for ice fishing on the other hand, since Trout Lake is entirely inside the BWCA, it opens up 2 weeks earlier than lakes outside of the wilderness area. This is usually the last Saturday in Dec. or the first Saturday in January. No snowmobiles or gas augers are allowed inside this boundary line though. This makes Snowbank and Burntside the more popular options for winter and summer Lake Trout fishing.
Hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions bud.
THX for all the info guys!
I should have mentioned that I plan to try Laker fishing next spring and I have a 90hp motor so the hp restrictions will come into play.

There’s no hp restriction on Lake Superior Don’t let the big lake intimidate you.

Lake Superior can be tough to beat, but if you’re looking to be near lake vermillion then Burntside is your best option.
Steve Foss is on the lake trout there more than anyone else that I know of during the open water. He is a member of IDO, but he hasn’t been too active lately. I could get you in touch with him if your interested in going with a guide first, so you can learn the lake and the methods used to be successful. If you want to wing it, the best access is on the Van Vac road off Grant McMahon rd.
