New guy here but have been browsing this site for a few weeks. You guys seem like you have allot of great info so I am hoping you could help me out. Got hooked on Superior this spring on a guide trip and ever since I’ve been working to get set up to make a go at it solo. Aiming for August 15. For that time of the year, what are the essentials to have in the boat for tackle? Planners? Downriggers? Dipseys? Leadcore? I’m a rook so any advice is greatly appreciated.

    Edit: thinking Two Harbors.

    Hey Jordan,

A wealth of that information at http://www.glangler.com/

Check it out! Great resource. I check the fishing reports for Superior nearly every day and just dream of not being in the office all day.

It’ll depend on what part of the lake you want to fish. The best easy to get to fishing could well be from Two Harbors to the Silver Bay area at that time. You’ll find salmon and lake trout all the way thru this general area but one place or the other will seem to have more salmon than trout and vice versa. I target lake trout at this time in the Two Harbors area while a lot of the locals are heading up the shore looking for salmon.

August is when I see schools of walleye running up the shore from the south shore too. They are a chance fish though, but if they are around whatever you are dragging for trout or salmon will catch them as well if the baits run thru the school. Check closer to shore for loose schools of fish. They can be either herring or waldos.

About the herring….if you get a fish or two, gut and gill them pronto and put them on ice. When you get home you can finish by filleting the meat like a walleye. Dredge in seasoned flour and fry in an oil/butter blend on medium heat. Herring cook super fast and the translucent meat while raw stays that way in part when fully cooked. When the coating is browned nicely, the fish is done. Herring are a treat from the big lake and in some eating establishments along the shore they are considered a delicacy.

If it were me I’d do the Two Harbors launch and stay in that general area while trolling both towards Silver Bay and/or down towards Knife River/Duluth. There is some amazing structure in the Two Harbors area that can provide some super trout fishing by trolling or jigging. You can leave the boards and mast at home at this time of the year if you carry some lead line rigs and dipsies as well as downriggers.

I’d be wanting a combo of down riggers and lead core rods that would be pulled behind boards.

This is very helpful info fellas, thank you. Might have to make another stop or two at cabelas/gander prior to the trip to get some leadcore. Just got a set of new 8’6″ trolling combos I’m antsy to use.

Got the gear, now about water. What are things to look for when targeting lakers? Do you guys look for bait balls or suspended fish? Or is it more of a temp/depth game? I run a humminbird 899 with the navionics chip. Pretty middle of the road as far as electronics go but I’m hoping it’ll get me a good idea of what’s cookin under the surface.

Just to touch no the gear again. I run 2 dipseys and at least 2 lc setups with or without boards. Sometimes I’ll add another lc or a straight up braid main line. You can fish the surface or use snap weight to get some depth.

I don’t have downriggers and have had great success without them. So don’t go out and buy them if you don’t have them.

I appreciate the insight. At this point in the game I’m working on some “garage engineered” downriggers to at least have the option to try them.

How many colors of lead core at minimum would you recommend?

Do you clip the boards to your lead core? Heard it’s tough on it but a guys gotta use what works right!?

You certainly can and I do from time to time but it can be tough on the lead and you are fighting the weight and line droop from the board to the rod tip. When I do this its typically only on an inside board rod.

Preference is to run segmented lead and clip on to the backer after the lead goes out.

If you only had one, my first choice would be 10 colors. I am running a 10 color and a 5 color currently. Not really ideal because it usually requires me to clip a board to the lead.

If I were to add 2 more setups to my arsenal, I’d add 6&4 color segments. I might even swap my 5 color out with a 2 or 3 color.

At this point in the game I’m working on some “garage engineered” downriggers to at least have the option to try them.

If it were me, I wouldn’t waste my time on this. You may run into issues on the water that really cuts into your fishing time. Not to mention safety concerns.

Sounds like a good variation in depth is the ticket. Since I’m just starting out, I think I’ll take two of my setups and go lead core and then spool up a couple of my river rods with some good braided and run two dipsys. Sounds like a good combo? Now I just gotta learn more about dipsys haha. I give you guys a ton of credit for what you know about this. I really appreciate all the great info.
