With 4 consecutive days above freezing, warm overnight temps and 50° sunshine with 15mph winds. You guys trust driving ATV across, as long as my launch is still holding up? I’m on the east side and drive to little lake. Yesterday there was .5″ water on top, blowing around. Large puddles

Not specific to this lake, but I also am curious about metro area ice conditions this up coming weekend.
I promised my nephew I’d take him out for his first ice fishing experience. We plan to fish a twin cities metro/western suburb lake Saturday morning.
I’m sure it will be very wet – but I assume overall ice is still very fishable? We’ll be walking to our spots from the access, so no vehicle or ATV.
    Any thoughts?

Walking will be fine as long as you can get on

Walking I would not worry about, I haven’t been on anything metro this year but there is no way we don’t have safe enough ice to walk on. Drove by Knife last night on my way home from Grand Rapids and the access looked iffy but watched a Tacoma come off it. There has still got to be plenty of ice out there just the accesses are going to be the issue soon if it stays warm.

I drove on a small metro lake last night. Still had over 2’ of ice. I would probably walk this weekend.

Drove on a west metro lake on Saturday that still had snow on it. Fished it Monday and drove out and all the snow had melted with water sitting on top. 24″ of good ice. Was going to drive out yesterday evening and all the water had soaked in and the top off the ice was getting soft. I’m sure it would have been OK but I have a new truck and an LOW trip this weekend so I didn’t go out. I had taking the sled out of my truck doah otherwise I would’ve walked out without hesitation.

Top of ice soft here. Always the last lake to freeze because so deep. Wondering if that means last lake to thaw lol. Being we get maximum sunset our side I’m guessing my landing will melt faster then the west side.

Lots of ice still for most lakes, some lakes like Pulaski set up much later so you have to be extra careful.

I was driving ATV 2 days ago, today I would not. 50° wind has been killing the ice as we speak. Dark blue areas forming with swans, walked out yesterday, the hole I was fishing by sounded like running faucet the entire time.. previous tip up hole was 3x bigger. Top 7″ honeycomb soft white ice.. start wearing life jackets if you go out on this lake.
