Lake Pepin Late August Walleyes

Ever since the mayfly hatch the walleye bite on lake pepin hasn’t been as good, the last 3 weeks fishing the Maiden Rock flats and other parts of Pepin have been extremely slow. We have been fishing 5-10am and we still produce fish pulling cranks with lead core but the numbers have slowed down a lot. Any suggestions of where the walleyes are at or where they will be moving the next month? Any specific depths for time of day?

i think eyes are just less aggressive when water gets above 70. especially on pepin. today was beautiful out there but I maybe spent an hour actually fishing. after labor day I will be able to hit it harder. not a big fan of bathtub water and big crowds so I hibernate in the summer and re surface labor day trough May. did notice the stripers were after baitfish pretty hard as I was packing up so that is always an option?

I got into the stripers last Sunday on Pepin. That’s always fun.

What’s your tactics for the stripers? I’m participating in the Take A Vet Fishing Saturday on P4 and would like to be able to put them on some action.

Look for the groups of seagulls diving, then look for the stripers busting the surface. I throw the kastmaster chrome spoon at the boiling water and vertical jig it too. They’re fun to catch and good to eat too. Just keep the white meat from the loin and cut off any red meat on the skin side.

They were going at 11 a.m. last Sunday on Pepin in 10’ of water, just upstream and to the right from the red bouy across from Lacopolus.

Tried today but nothing on Pepin. Marked a ton of fish but no luck on Pepin. Never found any stripers today either. Did clean two fiddlers to fry up tho – Wing dam.

i know this is late but any shiny spoons usually get bites. I usually see blobs of bait on the graph then look for shad breaking the surface. the stripers are not far behind most times. hope you got your partner on some fish!

Life has been busy and I haven’t shared much lately. I’ve snuck out for a few outings between football here and there in the last few weeks from late August until now.

We’ve seen water temps as low as 68 but more commonly 70-72. The bite has been very slow for us, but managed to get some fish off wingdams and saugers pulling lead off deep sand flats in 20′ of water. The bait fish are seemingly everywhere and every fish we’ve caught has been fat as can be. I’d expect the bite to get better when temps drop a bit more.

The fish below came off a sand flat a couple weeks ago on a flickershad. I thought for sure at 3.4mph it was going to snap the rod holder when it connected. She was released to be caught another day.

I had plans to fish last weekend and this weekend but our doberman ended up needing round the clock care due to some weird fever/illness that pretty much crippled her. she finally started to regain her balance after several vet visits and constant care. she is still wobbly but amazingly walking on her own again with assistance today. I hope by next weekend, she will be able to join me on the boat again as we both live for this time of year! I am having serious withdrawels not being able to get on the water but aiming for next sunday and playing hookie on monday. i will post a report if i can make it happen. good luck to all fishing the next week.

Very nice Sir! I commend you on the release. Not only will she have a chance to be caught another day, hundreds of thousands of offspring will also.

We were on Pepin this weekend. Trolled in the morning without any luck. Found some big gills on the south end and picked up two 16″ walleyes jigging for gills in 10′ to 12′ of water. Couldn’t find any perch which we usually do this time of year.
