Lake Pepin Ice 4/4/18

This week’s #LakePepin ice measurements are in and it may be time to break out the hair dryers and melt this stuff. The thickness ranges to from 16 to 22 inches, but we’re down to only a few miles of ice coverage. Next measurements will be Wednesday, April 11… if necessary. Interesting to note that Lake Pepin was ice free on March 1st last year, and only 1 measurement was even taken for the ice (mid February).

Any word when a breaker will be headed through, or if one will be headed through?

I wonder how much ice the rig that does it can break? 22″ is a lot of ice.

I “heard” the first tow that comes through can handle up to 13″.

I can’t confirm this.

So with 3-4 days of 50 degrees or more and one day long rain how much ice would go? I know thats a lot of ice but it will go.

just some days with straight sun can do a lot…the water is stained now so that alone with absorb enough heat to do some damage. With lows dipping in the low teens though sure as hell is not speeding anything up for us.

I haven’t looked much at the forecast but the FW said it was to be 50 degrees with an all day rain.

According to Marine Traffic, it looks like the first tug (TOM BEHRINGER) has gone through Pepin this morning, and locked through L&D 3 around lunchtime.

Can anyone confirm? Next measurement is due today unless this indeed did happen. They might skip it as a result.
