Lake of the Woods Christmas fishing and Low temps

    Hi everyone,
Was planning on heading up to lake of the woods the day after Christmas. As I’m sure most of you know, cold temps are coming. Looks like we are going to see highs of -12 with lows of -25 by upper red and Lake of the woods.

Is it even worth it to go? Is there any way the fishing bite will not be EXTREMELY slow due to the cold temps coming in?
    Thoughts?

I don’t think the cold effects the fishing. Had some of my best days when the weather was nasty cold. Just have to have a shack to stay warm.

I agree with trophybucs. Had one of my best days out of Zippel when it was -20.

Well typically a cold front slows things down but I wouldn’t let it ruin your trip. I travel a lot for ice fishing and always say the best time to fish is when you have the time. Years back I had a trip planned with my daughter (8 yrs. old at the time). Three days of east wind and a cold front. I almost didn’t go. She caught 1 fish in three days. It was a 31″ walleye. So you just never know. Unless you’re worried about staying warm I would go for it and have fun.

I’ve had some fantastic fishing trips to LOW and URL when temps were -30f in the morning and highs of -10.

I am more worried about safety. I’m bringing a 6 and 9 year old. But I got a couple buddies that will also be in the area as well, so safety in numbers, and I’m taking other precautions. Fish may/may not bite. Either way we will have fun playing games, watching old movies, just hanging out, talking etc. Your never too young learn 6-5-4. It’s going to be more fun than sitting on the couch looking out the window. Wouldn’t miss this trip for anything less than a blizzard. This is our third annual “boars week”. But I learned after a talking to by my wife after last year, instead of a whore bath, and going to the bar every night, we clean ourselves with wet wipes, and go to the restaurant for dinner. whistling redface

If pulling a fish house up there it would not be a bad idea to bring an alternate source of heat. I will be bringing a Big Buddy Heater with spare propane for my longer trips. If the heater goes out at least I still have a heat source. If using Buddy Heater I will of course have to vent it some. I’ve also heard of guys using treble lights, magnetic heaters or oil pan heaters to warm their 30lb tanks to help with propane flow and keep regulators thawed. Have a safe trip.

Splaining? Try “splaining” why or how there was a stripper in a fish house in the middle of UPRL years after it happened on a guys trip. Unfortunately some could not keep their mouths shut! She said no phones out but it is all in the cloud.

We are taking the sleds up with us….starting late 90’s sleds in -20 typically isn’t a quick and easy process after sitting out all day lol. Going to make it up there and tough it out haha will make a good adventure/story out of it up there with the old man and brother.

Will be heading out of Arneson’s & will most likely be eating there most nights for dinner. If you are going to be up there that time, shoot me a message-would love to talk fishing and hear how the fish are biting for you.

I too am guessing the conditions will slow the bite. I will be fishing with my Dad and my son. We will be fishing off Adrian’s Road Wed. & Thurs. I won’t pass up that opportunity.

I have been up during some severe cold fronts that really seemed to slow the bite but other times done O.K. Always managed to have a pretty good time.

If you go on the first day or 2 of the cold front it definitely will slow it, once it’s stabilized to Antarctic temps (which it will by Tuesday) I believe it will start to pick back up again. At least that’s what I hope happens since we’ll be arriving Thursday to fish thru the weekend…

A few days after the cold front fishing will be better. If its sunny out fishing could be very good.
