Massive drifts and slush. I’d contact resorts to see about plowing a spot because they are working overtime right now trying to fix roads and everything.

I’m heading up Friday morning. If you want to PM me your cell # I can shoot you a text once we get on the ice and let you know what the conditions are. Providing I have cell service up there that is.

I was just up there and it is a slushy mess. If I didn’t have a buddy up there who plowed out an area for the wheelhouse I don’t think it would’ve worked. I saw multiple wheelhouses stuck in drifts and slush trying to get off the roads. I heard a few were having issues with water coming up through the holes because of flooding. Like Christian said, call ahead and see what the resorts are offering or advising.
As far as the fishing went. It was okay, nothing special. We had steady action most of the day but the size left a lot to be desired. If the conditions weren’t so bad we would’ve moved. With it being what it was, it was a lot of work just to set up the first time. So for a three day trip it wasn’t worth it to me.

Just talked to a buddy up there. He said if you dont mind slush and water. Plus not being able to be mobile. Then it’s worth going up there

I’ll be heading on up tomorrow and I’m staying out of Ballards but we are using their day shacks. PM me and I can let you know what they are saying when I get up. Like they are all saying I’d call a resort with Lake access.

Sounds like a blast! I’ve heard the same. I’m still half-considering a late-season trip up there with a 1/2 ton truck and portables, sticking to resort roads almost entirely. Starting to wonder if that money would be better served putting a Talon on the boat instead.

This whole snowiest-month-in-decades deal kinda screwed things up.

If you have wheelhouses or going out on your own yes call ahead. But I just spoke to Ballards and they said their Day Houses are good to go.

Annual trip out of Arneson’s 3/7-3/10. We’ve been up there in some pretty sloppy/slushy years. Will be interesting to see how this one compares.

Zipple bay has been letting people out since Monday. Adrians is hoping to let wheelhouses out starting tomorrow. Morris point is still closed as well as Dales. Hoping dales opens up by Friday as that is where I would like to go out of.

Thanks everyone for the replies, we originally were going to Devils Lake but it sound worse out there, we’ll be making calls around on friday and make a decision on where we will be going, I hope we don’t have to call our trip off completely. the one buddy of mine has cancer, and my other bud has a Yeti tandom axle wheel house that we were hoping to get him out in.

It’s getting really bad up there. I was 20 miles out last weekend, and there was water around a lot of houses and on some areas of roads. I’ve heard new breakers and cracks opened and you’re not getting off a road with a wheel house unless someone plows you a spot. It’s really going to get bad when it gets above freezing; the banks are high around roads, and that water won’t have anywhere to go.

But maybe it’s not so bad closer to shore and in different areas of the lake

This is where I’m really glad we are going up tomorrow morning and renting from a smaller, private outfitter who brings all their guests out in SUVs with tracks. No worry about getting stuck or in a bad spot. Not to mention every house of theirs will be completely separated from pressure! Can’t wait.

Just so you know the border lakes of mn and sad are open all year now. Accesses are limited but if you don’t want to drive as far.

I just got back from Oak Island yesterday. The main road in from Youngs bay was ok in and out. There are slush spots here and there. The fishing was terrible to be honest. I thought the fishing would be better. We had enough keepers to have one meal in 3 days of fishing. Tulibees sure were active though. We brought a bunch of them home to smoke.

I’m up in the angle now, and I think quite a bit of those soft spots are starting to heal up. We’re staying at Flag Island and running snowmobiles and portables, and we haven’t really ventured TOO far off the bomber paths. We kept enough for a meal this evening…

Can you explain what you mean by border waters being open year round?

Travel on the lake was definitely sporty this last week. Weather has been pretty stable for a few days so road should be opened up. There was a lot of slush pockets and probably still are. I wouldn’t advise anyone to go blazing a trail with a truck and a wheel house.

This is not true – yet. It’s been rumored for good reason for a while but it hasn’t taken affect at this time, SD border opener is currently scheduled on 4/20/19, page 61 of the 2019 MN Regs. The regs do list that it is subject to change and IMO they’ll open it up over the summer and will be continuous from there on.

This was confirmed this week. Mn and sd border lakes and rivers. So big stone traverse are the main lakes. Open all year to fishing no openers. This was initiated by sd game and fish and Minnesota finally set it this week.
