Lake Minnetonka Snowmobile Hit and Run – Friday 01/29/2021

Hi Everyone, my name is Peter and I have “lurked” on these forums for a while. I have thought about making an account, but never got around to it. I wanted to share some news in hopes of helping law enforcement catch these guys, unfortunately this is my first post…

Friday night my girlfriend (Sam) and I headed out to Lake Minnetonka from Wayzata Bay. As many of you know, this is a very busy part of the lake…plenty of people ice fishing, skiing, walking, kite snowboarding (whatever that is called). We walked out toward spirit island, and started getting set up. Everything was done except the tip ups. Sam was sitting in the house while I was outside setting lines up. We fish in a portable hub house (Eskimo Quickfish 3) with reflectors on it. I also use a bright light and keep the windows down so light can be seen from the house. The attached picture shows what this looks like (taken on a different day but included just for reference).

Two snowmobiles came in right toward us going VERY fast – especially for the area they were entering. My first thought was that they might buzz past us. Well, a split second later I knew something was wrong and screamed as loud as I possibly could. The next thing I can remember is running toward the house. As the snowmobile hit, the house was gone instantly and debris flew everywhere. I was in shock. For a moment I thought there was no possible way she could not have been killed. The most shocking part I think was when she stood up from the chair she was sitting in and we ran to each other in complete shock. She was not dead, and did not appear to be badly injured….I couldn’t believe it.

I began screaming at the two on snowmobile–they were sitting about 100 yards from us. I started to run to them, but Sam grabbed me and said her foot hurt really bad. I could not believe they were just sitting there…not helping…appearing to debate what to do. After calling 911 I took a quick video of the mess (I wanted to document something in case it could possibly help), then put Sam in the Smitty sled and headed back to shore to be there to meet the ambulance that would waiting for us.

The snowmobiles took off towards Wayzata bay and disappeared. It was such a terrible feeling to see them flee the scene and leave us there. They had no idea what happened, and what could have happened.

It was a MIRACLE that the snowmobile went through the house on the side she was not sitting on (where I was sitting a minute before!). She ended up with a bad contusion to her shin/foot and a bruised bone, but it could have been SO much worse. We are very very thankful.

I am sharing this because I am seeking information from anyone on this incident, to please report this to the Hennepin County Sheriffs Water Patrol (612-596-9880). I really hope these individuals are caught…they know what kind of people they are. I also want people to understand they are responsible for their own safety, I have thought about something like this, but always thought “well that wont happen to me”. With reflectors on the hub house, and lit up windows….I thought I had taken enough precaution.

There are so many people that use this Lake that are great people, its these few that ruin the experience for us all. Please be careful out there.

What are the cops saying? How far were they able to follow the tracks. Sad deal, glad Sam is OK. I’ve never been a fan of that lake and this is just another example. Yes I understand it can happen anywhere, but it didn’t. It happened there.

Keep us updated on if they are ever caught and if anything is done.

Welcome to IDO. I hope the guilt overwhelms these guys, and they turn themselves in or a friend that knows something does! So glad you two are ok!

Glad both of you are ok. Scary stuff and totally uncalled for. Hope the idiots are apprehended and prosecuted to full extent of the law. Probably drunk and didn’t want to loose their driver’s license.

Some people should not be allowed to own anything but shoes. Walking is not crowded.

Thank God you guys are okay. It could have been so much worse.

Your story immediately reminded me of a little boy named Alan that died from the exact same scenario by my house.

I hope like hell you guys find the snowmobilers that did it.

I’d get this out on news media. Must be sled damage. Too late to prove being drunk or on drugs but having family or friends asking about the damage after seeing it broadcast on the news, applause

Glad to hear you guys are ok. Maybe the mods can move this to general discussion, where it can get more exposure. I would love to hear that they caught these d bags and they pay for it. flame

WOW !!! that is some really scary poop. I’m glad the injuries are not worse than they were. I hope these D-bags are found and charged to the fullest extent of the law. Including failure to render aid.

Scary for sure – I cringe internally every time I hear someone rip across a lake on a snowmobile thinking I will here a catastrophe unfold. Hope you can get some closure on this one.

That is just incredible and that she was not hurt worse. I snowmobile a lot and couldn’t imagine running into a lighted fish house with reflectors but could see this with a fish house without lights and no reflectors. After fishing the past couple of weekends with family, including grand kids after dark in a hub, oh my gosh.
Accidents happen but for them to stop and then flee the scene, they are probably not sleeping very well waiting for the knock on the door or for dad to ask about the sled. Definitely expect to see this on the 10 o’clock news.

Wow this makes me sick. Most likely a drunk. Why else wouldn’t they stop.
Like bman mentioned above this happened near home with a much worse turn out, and a young boys life was taken. Accidents do happen, but these types of accidents don’t need to happen at all.
Happy uou guys are all safe and sound. Could have been much worse just inches in a different direction

Gonna try to find a flag and whip light for the hub before the next fishing trip. Not sure how they could miss a shack with windows open and lights on though. Driving over tip ups is a real richard cranium thing to do but hitting a shack is a whole different level.

I just wanted to post and say we have read all the comments and appreciate them all! The news contacted me because of this website and people sharing the story – as others have said this getting the story out there is probably the best bet at having some leads turn up.

Just glad to be sitting here with Sam and putting it all past us!

The “news” contacted you because of this website? Which one…WCCO-4 ?

That’s the one I saw the extensive segment on the 6 o’clock. Pretty sure it wasn’t Frank or Amelia on the trail…maybe Max? He’s sort of an outdoorsman…ice fishing he does.

I’m really curious who from the “news” happened upon this site to pick up on the story. Or if they (the news) lurk here more than we know?

Anyway, you Peter…incredible you and moreso Sam are here to live and tell.

Don’t have to lurk, we welcome more participation and info.

How was the bite out there? Getting anything? neutral
