I just got into an Iphone7 and am looking for an app to cover my fishing needs in MN. Any suggestions? This is all new to me.

    What needs in particular?

    Navigation and depth maps:
    Navionics

If you want to let everyone know about your spot:
    FishBrain

Want to let friends and family know how much better than them you are:
    Facebook

I have an Android, so I don’t know what crosses over onto iPhones

    MyRadar – for weather radar
MeteoGroup’s WeatherPro, Morecast, Weather Timeline – Wind and pressure history and forecast.

    https://maps1.dnr.state.mn.us/compass/mobile/

This is a link off the MN DNR site and it is free…has good info to get you started. After that I would suggest buying Navionics, $10-$15, from you app store. Navionics makes your phone a handheld GPS for the most part. Those are the 2 things that I get the most out of.

FYI, I have not found the Navionics I-phone app to be overly accurate….at least on Mille Lacs compared to an H20 with a lakemaster chip..

But are you laughing with me or at me, because I know Matt’s laughing at me.

Sorry Tom, I completely forgot you were being specific in the title. In that case Navionics is the best Lake Map app.

I am surprised the fish brain devs didn’t get the Google notification yet alerting them to someone mentioning the app here.

100% correct. Navionics on a mobile device is not incredibly accurate like some other devices. I still use the App on my phone quite often, specially on short outings or days I pack light. My Expedition C is actually finding itself in my glove box of my truck more often than my pocket when ice fishing…Only really getting busted out on big trips.

I agree with the herd about navionics accuracy, but I don’t know of any other option that even comes close. I use it at home more than on the water.

I will say that most navionics charts are more accurate than the DNR maps. Plus you have the benefit of using sonar charts where users have uploaded their sonar data to make public maps.

No brainer. Get the navionics app for wherever you plan to fish. They have one that has USA and Canada, which I think was about $60.

Tom, do you want me to take a few screen shots of what it looks like in a particular place?

I second the Navionics app. It can be very helpful.

A buddy just called and he has the Navionics app in his phone. He’s stopping by later to show me. Thanks though biggill. It sounds as though the navionics will get the nod. I appreciate all the input here.

Do you think the community auto charting updates is affecting the accuracy?

Yes, usually positively, but only slightly.

The navionics app does not seem to be compatible to my older gallaxy tablet. I’ve got a garmin hand held and the boat chatplotters but I don’t carry those on a regular basis.
Just for the novelty I thought it be a neat to have an convenient app, while traveling on the road for work, to punch in a lake or scoll to that I travel by just to get a general look of the layout of the lake to pass the time.

2 things I can stare at and play around with all day making observations, scouting and predicting.

    – Weather forecasts, maps, radars and apps
    – A Lake map

Ok, there are a couple other things, but I’ll keep it PG.

Wow.. No nods for the Fish Smart app by Humminbird? I’ll use Lakemaster all day over Navionics but it is slighty more expensive! I just buy the main lakes I fish and good to go..

This is the first time I’ve heard of the fish smart app.

Just checked it out at Androids app store. There are a lot of complaints, mostly that it’s expensive. $9-$30 to download one lake or system. Most of hummingbirds responses to that is a downloaded map can be transferred to a HB unit.

I don’t think they went about it the best way. It might be ok for people who only fish one or a few lakes.

I think their biggest issue is most people buy the app because they don’t have a unit. If they wanted to go this route they should have made it so you buy a chip set for the unit and then can download it to the app.
