I have been reading about the blue gill fishing at Lake Havasu, AZ. Huge gills, 2-3 lbs. I would love to go. Has anyone been there?

I was there the month of January last year. January is not the best time to find redear sunfish. We would find them in 30 to 40 FOW. Would only find a couple fish at each spot. They were nice fish when you found them. I rented a slip at the marina for the month. The weather was fantastic. The fishing was very slow. I was told by several people the fishing is better in March.

Haven’t been but a couple of friends have. On the bucket list. If the fishing isn’t great I hear the scenery can be dynamite.MNdrifterPosts: 1671January 18, 2022 at 7:52 pm #2091194My folks winter in Havasu. Dad leaves his Pro V down there. He fishes quite a bit but mostly catches white bass and smallmouth. He says the Red ear don’t pick up until April or May depending on water temperature. They are home by April 1st so he misses out on them. There’s a guy on here that also winters there, I forgot his name. He’s caught a few monsters I know. And yeah dad says when the Cali girls come to town for spring break he takes a lot of walks down by the canal.

January 19, 2022 at 9:39 am #2091307Timing is everything, not much to look at but the desert right now. In winter the town is full of snowbirds that average about 75 yrs old. Beginning in may it’s a whole different crowd! Oh- and fishing has been terrible sine middle of December.
January 20, 2022 at 6:26 pm #2091853Thanks for all of the good insights folks. Looks a bit busy for my tastes. This said, there have to be some boat ramps away from town and the crowds.

Not likely. Might be one up the canyon but if it’s a low year good luck getting it down to Havasu. Smoker would know more possibly, but my dad said it can be treacherous in spots. The rest of the lake that I’ve seen other than Havasu and the casino on the California side the rest of the lake is desolate canyon and desert.
January 20, 2022 at 9:26 pm #2091895There aren’t allot of public access sites because most of the shoreline is undeveloped. A few right in Havasu and a good one at cattail cove state park downriver about 14 miles near the parker dam. There are a couple more on the California side but it’s a very long roundabout drive to get to them. In the summer they are extremely busy but from November thru April it’s very quiet at the landings here. Like I said before the difference between summer and winter here is unbelievable.
