Lake Calhoun or lake Harriet

Has anyone fished lake Calhoun or lake Harriet in the winter? With how deep the lakes are and how little pressure they get due to their motor restrictions there has to be something lurking in the depths.
I don’t know what my strategy would be but I would like to try something. Any thoughts?

Completely agree, I feel there has to be tanks in there. I know for a fact it’s one of the best muskie fisheries in the metro. I’ve read in a couple old books of the monstrous bass as well.

On my bucket list to try out, but obsessed with the river for now. Feel ill let it marinate for 20yrs then I’ll give it effort.

I fished both quite a bit last winter. There is definitely more pressure in the winter. I found some fish, but don’t think that I have figured it out yet. I did not catch anything really big nor did a find a lot of fish. These are some really fun lakes to just figure out, and I suspect it will take me a couple years to do so. But given that they are the easiest lakes for me to get on, I will continue the hunt this winter. PM if you ever want to get together to compare notes or team up on the lakes some time this winter.

I remember fishing from shore as a kid and would haul huge sunfish out of there. As a kid I’d fish many metro lakes for reference. Biggest in the metro easily, talking the hump/muscle head sunnies. This was 20yrs ago, but definetely has the potential still.

Grandma had photos of us with these fish, to bad they’re lost somewhere in the family.

I think I might try Harriet first this winter and probably just do a few tip ups with some decent sized minnows. Maybe get a few guys to cover some ground and see what happens.

Mark me as someone who would be interesting in going.

Always thought it would be fun to fish those lakes. Not so much from a fishing perspective but a cool place to go. Used to live in Uptown and I miss just being on them.

I’d be interested in giving those lakes a try, Mitch. And, I have a buddy that I’m sure would be interested, as well.

Might be fun to pick a date and get a group together to see what we can come up with. Lets see if we can get some cold weather over the next month then set a date?

Sounds like a good plan to me….get enough guys out there, cover some ice and see what we can find.
