Dropping the women off at Welch to Ski saturday and going to try Byllesby for the first time. Any general tips for this lake, species to target, general spots to start, or any word on the bite? Any info would be greatly appreciated. I’m going to be doing my research as well the rest of the week.

Access from the beach on the Dakota side or the Sportsmans access on the north shore. Do not cross the channel without checking ice and do not drive past the point towards the cliff on the Dakota side, ever. Fish around the flats on the Dakota side for panfish, channels and Walleye. It’s a bite window lake for Walleye, so don’t bother much outside of sunrise/sunset. It can be a fantastic lake to fish but it’s for sure a boom or bust fishery. My FB largemouth and gill both came from there. I have seen many 28-30″ Walleye caught as well.

Is there decent bass fishing there? I’ve never heard anything besides the occasional smallmouth

When you’re referring to the “Dakota” side, is that the Regional Park on the East end closest to Cannon Falls?

The two landings I referenced are circled in blue. The red X is where the ice is almost always thin. The lake is split essentially right down the middle E/W between Goodhue and Dakota county. The north side is Dakota, south being Goodhue. You can use the boat launches on the far east side by the dam, but so so at your own risk. Many locals use them.

    Not really.

Lake Byllesby is a dam up river lake. The ice will be thinner where the current is going thru. Be careful. It seems like people fall thru every year.

During open water season, I’ve caught some beautiful smallies over 4 lbs.

Update: fished saturday, Caught a huge smallmouth (21 inches) off a shiner tip up. Lost a pike on a tip up, but didnt mark many fish jigging. Setup on rock pile 19 FOW.
