For the guys out there who have Kuiu gear, I’m looking at ordering a jacket and possibly shell.

How do you find the fit of Kuiu? I’m looking to get into some more technically-oriented clothing for the upcoming whitetail season that’s not so heavy and bulky. Also, I want to be able to change over more easily between “sitting” clothing and more active clothing because these days whitetail hunting weather in MN can range from the 20 to 70.

Specifically, I’m looking at the Kenai jacket and it’s described as a “mid layer”. So that would imply that it’s sized to fit well under either a rain layer or a shell like the Guide jacket. Does Kuiu gear fit together in this way so you don’t have to adjust the size upward?

What are the other go-to pieces?

Must say I really like the designs and the emphasis on light weight. Since I also use my heavy clothing for coyote hunting, I also like the Vias camo. IMO so many camo patterns are overloaded with green and “dark hardwoods” schemes. Neither of which we have in northern MN. Any camo pattern with green in it sticks out like a sore thumb in the winter and “dark hardwood” schemes make you look like a trash bag sitting next to a tree.

Based on the product description of the Guide Jacket, I would not bet on it fitting over the Kenai without upsizing the Guide Jacket – both the Kenai and Guide are listed as an athletic fit. My guess is that those two pieces would layer best under any of their rain jackets.

The KUIU Guide DCS Jacket is made with a Primeflex® 274g/m2 4-Way Stretch Soft Shell fabric. The face fabric is treated with Toray’s industry leading Kudos® DWR & has a micro-fleece backer for warmth and comfort. This piece is built to be a rugged, all-purpose outer layer for colder conditions- although the athletic cut allows it to fit well beneath raingear when the weather calls for it. Six pockets, pit zips, adjustable cuffs, 2-way adjustable hood, and an inner collar make this KUIU’s most feature-rich outer layer jacket.

I haven’t seen this gear in person but looking at the fabrics and technology they list on their website in relation to their pricepoints and I would be all over this brand assuming the fit is right. Hope this helps, good luck.

Thanks for the reply Zooks. The Kuiu gear looks awesome and I’ve tried on pieces at a hunting show, but didn’t get a chance to put it all together to see how layers would fit.

It’s probably going to come down to committing to ordering and returning what doesn’t fit. You just get so much more with this brand and I’m trying to simplify and get down to covering a maximum range of temps and activity levels with a minimum number of different pieces of gear. Which seems to be the idea behind Kuiu.

Would be interested to hear people’s thoghts on the gear they own. How quiet is it, etc.
