Got a tip from a buddy of mine about this recall. Here is a link to see if yours are in the recall. I have 2 at home and one in the boat and all of them were in the recall. Filled out the form to get free replacements last night.

Thanks for the heads up, my marine unit is included in the recall.
November 22, 2017 at 8:38 am #1729799I posted about this a couple weeks ago.

Sorry, I missed that, but it doesn’t hurt to get the word out again
November 22, 2017 at 9:19 am #1729808It’s a good way to get a new extinguisher since they’re only good for 10 years. Check the date on the bottom of the unit.

What’s funny is this recall goes all the way back to 1972! I wouldn’t want to trust a 45 year old extinguisher.
November 22, 2017 at 1:16 pm #1729876I went on line and my fire extinguisher was one that was recalled. I got a new one in about 2 weeks and had to send the old one back in the same box the new one was sent in. They provide a new return label and instructions on how to send the old one back. I called fed x and it was picked up the next day.

Mine still hasn’t showed either. However my girlfriends, which I registered hers a couple days afterwards, showed up within a week and a half.
December 11, 2017 at 12:30 pm #1734618Well heck at least they are talking to you to keep you informed. There was a number on the recall on how many units were effected… It was a very large number and as the notice spreads it’s going to get worst.
I still have two in boats that I haven’t had a chance to look at yet.
Who would trust a 45 year old extinguisher? The person that has a fire and sees the red extinguisher sitting in the corner not touched or looked at for 45 years.
Iowaboy1Posts: 3839December 11, 2017 at 12:48 pm #1734628I had to have some fire fighting training when I worked at a local coop back in the late nineties,it was related to the fuel storage we had on site as well as the warehouse being full of all types of oil and greases.
anyway,we were told to go through our fire extinguishers three times a year, take them down and shake them up to loosen any settled or caked powders as a building would have inherit vibrations from winds,freeze/thaw cycles, loud noises, etc.that can and will cause the settling/caking.
I thought,oh brother this guy is telling us a sea story,to my surprise many of the extinguishers had in fact settled to the point of being unusable if needed in an emergency and were replaced due to the caking in them.
after I had bought my last boat,I checked the extinguisher in it,guess what???
after many miles and hours of bouncing down the road and being on the water,caked/packed solid!!
it took quite a bit of shaking and tapping it on a wood block to loosen the powder back up!!
guess now I had better see if it is on the recall list.you can take it in and have it refilled and re-certified for minimal cost,it might take them a week to get it back to you.
google fire extinguisher service in your area.pool2foolInactiveSt. Paul, MNPosts: 1709December 11, 2017 at 12:59 pm #1734632I appreciate that they took the time to communicate, but that doesn’t make the message itself any less frustrating. They created a defective product and sold it to consumers. Their entire operation should be on hold until they right the ship for the people they’ve already taken money from.
The email says “due to high demand the most comparable replacement for your unit is backordered.” Sorry, the demand is their problem, created by their bad design. They should be sending out replacement units of higher value if that’s what it takes.
The recall motivated me to check my home extinguishers as well. While they weren’t recalled, they were getting old so I decided to replace them. I went to Home Depot and they are selling a Kidde unit off the shelf that looks exactly like my recalled unit, plastic handle and all. So either A.) Kidde prioritized getting new/safer units to retailers over their recall customers (gotta keep that profit chain chuggin!), or B.) HD is actively selling recalled units.
December 11, 2017 at 1:25 pm #1734638Couple of things P2 and I’m not trying to change your mind…
Generally speaking going to the next higher value would mean larger size. That could mean something that you won’t be happy with in your boat or fit in the location you had it before.
I did check a new one marked 2015 on the bottom and it was not on the recall list. That might prove your point I spose.
Iowaboy Just make sure they aren’t rusty or corroded when tapping on them! Nothing like the feeling of an extinguisher burping out a couple ounces of dry chemical while standing in front of a fire that’s getting larger by the second….don’t ask how I know.

What?
Oh I see, I got mixed up from another thread.pool2foolInactiveSt. Paul, MNPosts: 1709December 11, 2017 at 1:39 pm #1734649Couple of things P2 and I’m not trying to change your mind…

And maybe I’m being saltier than necessary. I just think the process is flawed. They knew how many of these units were out there, therefore they should have known the production requirements to meet the recall demand in a timely manner. If they can’t meet the demand, then they should issue manufacturer’s coupons to those affected so we can just go to Home Depot and buy a replacement on our own. I’d be less worked up if the recalled item wasn’t a legally-required piece of safety equipment.
A guy in my situation is left with two choices — keep taking my chances with the defective unit in my boat and hope it works if it’s needed; or spend more of my money on an additional unit while I wait for Kidde to get their act together.
Given that I’m often fishing with my 5th-grade son, it will likely be option #2. And that’s $50 I could’ve spent on Hamm’s, gosh darnit!
December 11, 2017 at 1:51 pm #1734652I was going to say since we know about the recall and that it’s the plastic handle that is breaking, we would just need to be more careful IF we would need to use it.
With just a little reflection on that thought, if there’s a fire in the boat, I’m thinking it’s going to be hard to keep a persons wits about them…and I wouldn’t bet my life on it much less my off springs life.

Not the handle breaking.
“The extinguishers, sold by Kidde, can become clogged or “require excessive force to discharge,” and fail to work during a fire emergency, the CPSC said. In addition, the nozzles on some of the extinguishers can detach with enough force to potentially injure someone.”
December 12, 2017 at 7:54 am #1734819Totally missed that Munch, Thanks!
What annoys me is that I was going to share this thread with Kidde but after 10 minutes, I couldn’t find a email ad to contact them unless I had a model number.
I’m going to guess the phone number is a maze of voice mail options.

Much like the Takata airbag recall in which dealers were not able to get replacement parts for long after the recall was issued…
December 12, 2017 at 8:06 am #1734823Mine’s apparently not affected…but it’s from 2001, so I guess I should replace.
December 15, 2017 at 2:46 pm #1735945Received a 3 pound to replace my 2 pound. Took about 3 weeks. Now I just have to get the two out of the boats to check them.

Thanks for the update BK. I’m on 3 weeks and 2 days, mine was a slightly different model.

Shut it nick, the dream is always alive boat is always ready to go. Have 12/22 thru 1/2 off work, if we get any dry days in the mid-30s with manageable wind conditions I’ll be hoping to hit p4.
Yeah I guess that’s a lot of “ifs” eh? On top of getting the FW to police the rugrats solo for a day. May as well get that thing winterized after all.
