Kid ATV’s (90 & 110cc) Which is the best?

I’m looking to get my 10 year old a kids ATV to drive around a few acres I have up north. I’m leaning towards the 2025 Yamaha Grizzly 110cc model because it has EFI (the previous generations had 90cc’s and a Carb)

Is there anything to look out for? I prefer the utility Grizzly style vs the sporty Raptor design because it has front and rear cargo racks for carrying light duty stuff. I also like that the Yamaha has a backup kickstart (not sure if other brands do as well)

I’ll likely be buying new as the used market prices aren’t that far off from just buying new…Just looking for experienced advice and things to watch out for/avoid…

Buy your self the yamaha or a can am and watch that kid have a couple years of fun. BUT How bigs the kid, any riding experience? When my boy was 10ish a older Honda rancher was the ticket. 350 all time 4×4 and had many uses besides a kids atv. He also was starting to learn the clutch on our old yamaha blaster. The 110 gets out grown so fast between 10 , 11 years old.
That 110 is typically bought for 7 to 8ish year olds

Just my opinion and you know your kids ability better than me. No way in heck I would waste my money on a 110cc atv. Especially knowing they will out grow it in 1 year. We took the mower deck off of a garden tractor and put a 24 or 27 hp engine on it, made wood block extensions for the pedals, and my daughter out grew that in 1 month. I ended up making a throttle restriction for my artic cat 500 and let them rip on that. by age 9 or 10 the restrictor was gone and they had free reign of the trails here on my farm. At 11, she was doing mountain forestry roads out west. Again, you know your kids better then I. Just hate to see money p’d away on something out dated in a very short period of time

I agree with Randy and BC in that the 90 and 110 ATVs get outgrown so fast that I don’t see them as being worth it. My kids were big and didn’t even fit on the 90 size when it was within their recommended age range.

I ended up buying Coleman mini-bikes and the kids have had endless fun on these. They are simple to ride, go anywhere, and they are Chonda (Honda clone) powered so they are as simple and reliable as the day is long. We’ve kept one of these bikes because the kids still ride it even though they are teenagers and it’s great for a run-around utility ride just to go back and forth to fetch tools, etc.

Dirtbikes are more fun. If my 4 year old daughter can bomb around on a Yamaha PW, your 10 year old could easily learn on a TTR 110 and have years of use out of something that size. A bike that size you can easily get in any truck bed and in theory a used one would be cheaper than a similar aged ATV.

The answer at my house is to have both. 2 and 4 wheels have their own place. But everyday use, the dirt bikes always are the first choice. Even for my 9 yr old daughter. The little one will be getting a pw when she turns 2 just like the others did.

Isn’t it pretty plainly spelled out in the rule book what age kids can operate what? Pretty sure a 10 year old running full sized ATV isn’t legit unless things have changed since I was that age.

I’m not knockin you, just sayin. My parents let me ride a 3 wheeler all over the countryside when I was young but I think things are a little different now. I personally know several adults that have gotten major peepee slappings for allowing it and my girlfriends parents had one hell of a legal battle when 2 of their kids rolled a 4 wheeler and one of them got hurt on their own land. To each their own but to me it would be pretty tough to tell a kid go nuts but don’t leave our property.

If the OP is 100% opposed to something like a TTR 110 that’s 3 speed without a clutch and super easy to ride, I’d go with BC’s suggestion and look for a Rancher 350. They have a low center of gravity, are easy to work on, hold their value, are geared low so that they still have some utility value and won’t go 60mph down the road with a kid on it.

I might be wrong but in Wisconsin a kid has to be 14 and pass an ATV class to ride public trails and routes. Private property anything goes.

It’s not that hard. There are places and times to ride and places and times to not ride. To scare a kid not to ride is ridiculous. Obviously don’t let a 10 year old go rip down the city roads, if you do then your a idiot. If you let your kids rip with passengers then your also kind of a idiot. Don’t be a idiot and everything will be just fine. Our cops don’t harass us unless we deserve it, every kid around me rides, all over our area, both bikes and wheelers. I’ve posted many pictures here teaching kids to ride. Scare tactics are just plain dumb.

Where did I say I was trying to scare kids? I wasn’t aware there were so many 10 year old IDO members. Where are you letting your kids “rip” if the “cops”
Leave them alone if your and “idiot if you let them “rip” on city streets? How to they get all over if they don’t leave private property? The police/sherriffs/conservation officers around here have zero tolerance for that stuff. I’m not saying an agree with them or I disagree with you. I’m just making a point that the OP may be unaware of but go ahead and jump all over me as you do to everyone else that ever has a different view on something as you.

I bought my kids a 90cc arctic cat atv and they had an absolute blast on it. I bought it when the oldest was about 10 so got many years of use, heck I even had a blast riding it in and we just stayed in our yard. Joe, your case is different because your kid will outgrow it quick unless you have younger ones that are following along, then it will see a few years of use. A little bit bigger machine would be better in the long run and the 90’s are generally fairly tough to sell from what I have seen on marketplace since they sit there for quite a while. I sold ours to a cousin and didnt advertise.

So I lied, my kid will be 9 in a few months (I didn’t want any replies about 10 years old being some sort of a “requirement”)

I expect him to get 3-4 years of good use before I even think about upgrading to a bigger machine, we won’t trail ride, so its just cruising around a few acres, helping with yard work, etc.. remember the 2025 Yamaha Grizzly model is now 110cc’s not 90cc…while minimal, its more powerful….

As I said, I’ve looked at the used route and these things seem to hold their value like no other ATV as 3-4 year old machines are selling for close to what the new ones cost (as long as they are not obviously beaten on) so i’m not worried about money lost when eventually selling it…I just want a good machine that won’t give me any problems while he uses it…Everything I own is Yamaha, so i’m biased, but I know what i’m getting likely won’t break down…

Speaking of a 2 wheel machine, I always wanted a Yamaha BigWheel as a kid and have always kept an eye open on the used market for a well taken care of machine popping up, maybe i’ll pick one up eventually and the kid can ride it too once he gets alot older…

I’m also keeping a close eye on electric models as it removes the gas variable for a 9+ year old to possibly do something stupid with and the machine will always be near a charging plug…

I appreciate all of the replies! exactly what I was looking for!

He will be very happy on that Yamaha. Like any Yamaha they are always great machines. The power difference between 90 and 110 is so minimal you won’t hardly notice. The kid will love it.

The upgrade to EFI for 2025 is what will likely drive me to buying brand new…

I don’t know much of anything about the electric models specifically, other than one of my daugther’s preschool classmates had a brand new electric ATV that they brought over to our place this Fall to rip around on. That thing had some zip and it was a bit big for their 5 year old boy, but his 8 year old brother fit it well and rode it for quite a while. It definitely had enough power to get into trouble if they weren’t responsible and if the parent wasn’t present. Cool to see how far they’ve come.

Don’t get a razor quad unless you put some heavy mods into. They are very tippy stock and range is terrible.

Now the electric route for dir bikes is much different. My kid has a razor dirt bike that I have heavily modded. Been super fun and perfect for him. He’s 8. Tops out at 35 I have a limiter switch that has three speeds and last well over an hour. So much fun I bought myself a mototec electric dirt bike and we ride together.

    Pros of the electric are
Can ride them around the city like a regular bike. I don’t live in the country. Have a place up north. So he rides at both places.
No worries about getting it started
When he does put the bike down riding no worries of hot motors or mufflers.
Lighter so easier to pick up and handle.
You can mod them to really rip and put switches in them to tame them down.
So many mods out there for them now.
You can find used ones in the 200$-300 range.

    Cons:
Stock motor my kid outgrew in about a month. Super fun and simple to mod them however. I have seen adult ride these things that are modded to go 55-60mph.

    No wap wap sound.

He also has older 110cc wheeler. He rides the dirt bike way more. I would much rather have him crash a dirt bike over a wheeler. Much easier to bail on a bike. Way less likely to crush or pin him underneath. The dirtbike has taught him to respect both machines much more than his wheeler.

He has a track at the cabin and rides pretty hard on that with the dirtbike.

If you go that route let me know and I can point you in the right direction and help you with must have mods and other things.

Get a MX500 or 650 same frame and size or an SX500 slightly wider body kit. We have the SX500. Mostly because I like the look of them a little better and I found one used for 200$ All have same motor controller and battery size. My kids 8 turns 9 in May. He has been riding this size for two years now, but he is now just really grown into it where he can actually rip around and hit jumps and what not. I’m 5’8 160 and can ride his razor no problem and ride it to buddies house plenty. Nephew who is 16 still takes it out to rip around some for fun.
Here are the two we have. Razor in right. Mototec on left. Mototec comes stock with some better parts. Suspension and hydraulic breaks. He can ride both but mainly rides the razor as he can touch ground easier with his feet. Bombmoto is probably the best but are definitely more expensive but probably same price as quad you were looking at. I really enjoyed tinkering and messing with them and he helped me do it so was fun project to do with him. They are pretty simple machines. They are like a giant RC car. Controller receiver and battery is about it.
Midwest mini mods is actually in Minnesota. Shakopee I think and they make all sorts of upgrades. First upgrade is the battery. Then it’s all up to you from there. His has a 2000 watt motor. Instead of 500 watt. Which meant better breaks and what not. His buddie in neighborhood just did battery and still on stock motor and he is bigger than my kid and still enjoys it plenty. My kid was still only on speed 2 this past summer. So he still has top speed to master. The only thing that is stock in his razor now is frame, but that is not necessary either just kind of kept changing it slowly to change it into a full on pit bike. Probably about 1k into it including bike price. Tons of parts on Amazon for these things. Fairly cheap to.
Main reason we went this route to start is we live in the city and we have a school close to us with two large soccer fields so he can ride at home and nobody cares because they are damn near silent and I can toss it in back of truck by myself where he can go riding in the track or in the woods up north. Not sure what your neighbors are like but if he was riding here on a quad or gasser bike I’m sure someone would call the cops where we live.
We go on rides in the street around here as well. Perfectly legal like a bicycle. So we ride to the park or to our buddies houses.

Coming from gas engine 110’s, 125’s, 2 wheels and 4 wheels. I have an 11 year old that started on ssr’s and a honda 110 ATV. (Started at age 7) Lately Both he and I have been looking into electrics, The suron light bee, eride pro, etc. Our neighborhood is flooded in the summer with the noise of the boys and girls running all over. Those Razors for sure look like fun! After I lithium converted my golf cart, I am definetly looking harder at the electric options.
