I am purchasing an 01 alumacraft tournament Pro 175cs and want to add a kicker motor. I found a kicker that is coming off a ranger that the guy says is a long shaft (I assume long shaft is what I need) but doesn’t look like one.
the guy I am buying the boat from said It has a 20″ transom.
I have never had a kicker and am a novice when it comes to adding this to a boat. can anyone help me understand what I need for my setup?

I added a kicker to my 2012 Alumacraft Trophy 185 last year. This is my understanding of the different length shafts. A short shaft is 15″, a long shaft is 20″ and a XL shaft is 25″. I am pretty sure my big motor is a 25″ shaft and the kicker I added was a 20″. I called a couple of dealers and they said I could go with either a long or XL shaft for a kicker. I would think you would be good to go with a long shaft like you are looking at. I think the length of shaft is somewhere in the model number stamped on the motor.

To be accurate, that’s not a true “kicker”, it’s just a long shaft 9.9. It does not have the tilt/trim and enhanced transom bracket, like you’ll see on a Mercury Pro-Kicker.

Also, that generation of Merc’s must have been made of cast-iron, the one I had seemed to be the heaviest 9.9 ever created,,,,,,

The model number is probably 9.9MLA4ST , but the serial number doesn’t return any hits.

I would say the ML is a Long shaft, because of the L. If it was a XL, it would have a X in place of the L.

Like Hot Runr Guy brought up, having power tilt/trim is a nice bonus. But a guy can definitely get by without it.

I added one two years ago and love it. You can find various ways to mount it, but I opted to set them far enough apart so I can’t hit them regardless of each motors trim level or turn. Some of the better set ups are closer and I’m sure the kicker runs truer to the wheel, but I believe they are all ways connected and hence can’t touch. For the fuel line was told by at least three shops not to just splice the line to the big motor (half the boats I see are done this way….) I bought a switch for the line but was able to pull the floor and there was a second line to connect to. I’m guessing your boat might have this. If not and you want to buy the switch or other questions PM me.

Everybody knows it’s always about the shaft size. wink
