Fished Kewaunee Thursday night through Sunday morning. We had pretty good action Thurs night through Friday night, but once all the boats in the KD tourney hit the water Saturday morning, the bite slowed down big time. We only had 2 hours to fish Thursday night after the drive over from Eau Claire. Caught 3 nice kings (13-22lbs), and a 13 lb Steelhead. Friday morning we could only muster one King at 14 lbs, but headed out deeper (300-330 fow) later in the morning and kicked out 4 nice steelhead. Friday night we had one real nice steelhead out deep, then headed in to 100-130 fow for Kings. We landed 3 real nice Kings (18-20 lbs) and lost or tore off another 4:(….. Saturday morning through Sunday morning aren’t even worth mentioning. Things got real slow….. We had a few bows and a laker, but no Kings after we purchased our KD Salmon tourney tickets.

All of our Kings came on road kill (meat rigs) from 50-60 feet down off either downriggers or 280 foot copper setups out on planer boards. Bows mainly came on flasher/fly rigs out on boards from 10-30 feet down (2, 3, 5, 7 color lead setups), and a few on Dipsy Divers with 80-100 feet of line out. Spoons were completely dead for us………well…….except for one fish in the photo. Believe it or not, that is a standard size spoon, so about 3.5 to 4 inches long. That’s a SMALL King Salmon! I was letting that spoon out on a 3 color lead setup. I had only one color in the water (10 yards), plus the 10 foot mono leader and that little guy hit it right behind the boat. Now that’s aggressive! The other picture is my son holding a fish bear hug style. I sent the picture to my wife informing her that our son is going to need some laundry service. Man; that sweatshirt stunk by Sunday!

We came home with 16 fish, but more importantly, some great memories of another great trip to L Michigan.

Great story. Great memory maker there with the young’in! )
Sounds like you were everywhere for them. Good job hunting them up.
You musta been a Long way out of Kewaunee to get hat deep (300+) The weather and surf conditions must have been great.
WTG and thanks for the report….

Saturday and Sunday in Two Rivers / Manitowoc was tough as well. I was not able to boat any giants like the one in your picture though. Not sure I would have ever even known that one hooked up. Still sounds like you had a good trip.

Yes; we certainly had some nice weather conditions. Check out the beautiful conditions in the photo below. 330+ FOW out of Kewaunee is about 8 miles out I believe.

Do I detect a hint of jealousy there:)?…… When I was letting the line out, the rod tip just started thumping a bit. For a second I thought it was the flasher that just submerged and started to spin…..then I remembered it was a spoon; not a flasher/fly! We’ve had some small shakers over the years, but this one set the new standard for a small fish on my boat. It makes for a fun story:).
