Hey guys I’m going to be coming up to fish Kab/Ash River/Namakan area the first week of June. Our group usually fishes Lac Suel near Sioux Lookout but you know the whole border thing screwed that up. We would appreciate any tips/advice from anyone that is familiar with this area. Techniques, areas, do’s/don’ts would also be appreciated. We typically catch a lot of walleye, smallmouth and northerns in Canada with jerk baits, cranks and plastics. Can anyone tell me if this area fishes similar to Lac Suel? Thanks, I really enjoy this page.

From 2012 to 2015 I worked for the NPS and each spring I stayed at the government housing just east of the Ash River Visitor center. It was the best three years of my life.

Every night (weather permitting) I would take my personal boat out to fish. It was just a 14′ so I didn’t have a lot of range. What I found was that one of the best places to fish on the east side of Kab was 50′ in front of the ash VC landing. Every night guys would be loading their boats and heading off miles across the lake while some of the best fishing was at the landing. wave

Granted – I’m sure it just doesn’t feel right to drive all the way out to the ash river landing, launch your boat, and then go 50′ to fish when you have 50 miles of reservoir. Don’t overcomplicate it.

That time of year fish might still be post-spawn shallow all day. If not they will be shallow in the morning and evening. I like fishing shallow so I would get up at 4 on the weekends (in June its already light out) and have my limit by 6am and never fish deeper than 6′. If you are fishing mid-day go deeper. May-time fish are aggressive and didn’t seem to matter. I fished alot with huskies or other cranks. By June I would switch to blades with a crawler.

Are there any fish left in Kab? There were rumors that I just started that the COVID got them all.

Take all the information you get and soak it all up. Big lake, lots of structure, lots of fishy looking locations. But my first trip up there, just a couple of years ago, it was TOUGH to say the least, and I had a lot of shared info as well. I am not even going to tell you where I caught most of my Walleye, you wouldn’t believe me anyways. Enjoy though, what a wonderful set of lakes and scenery.

I would say right off the dock in the evening but I’d just be guessing.

I’ve always wonder how people do in the Ash River itself? Is that only good in the spring of does it hold fish all year? I keep thinking about how nice it would be casting off the dock of one of the resorts along the river just loving life.

Truth! Most of the regional forums onthis site don’t see a lot of traffic/comments, but the Kab forum has some pretty regular comments/updates. I learned a lot here when I took my fall trip to Namakan last year. Just scroll through the last 2 years of posts or so and you’ll find plenty talking about the time of year your going.
