Hey guys looking to get a k drill from buddy of mine. Do you need a hammer drill or will a 20v max brushless dewalt work? have a dewalt that I don’t use and don’t really wanna buy a new drill. How many holes can you drill on 1 charge. obviously ice thickness is key but if I bring 2 batteries is that enough for 10-15 holes? Thanks

What model is your drill? If a 900 series i would use it, if 700 I wouldn’t. If you already have the batteries, A 900 series drill can be found fairly cheap.

Agree with Dusty on the 900 series.

I use a Dewalt 996 with 5ah batteries. I can get 60 holes+ in 12″ of ice on one battery. That’s with a StrikeMaster Laser bit though. KDrill’s don’t cut near as well so I’d expect your hole count to be a bit lower in 12 inches of ice. As the ice thickens you will get fewer and fewer holes compared to the StrikeMaster Laser bit.

What I have found is that the drills that have the hammer drill feature or setting have enough torque, drills without a hammer drill setting dont have enough torque. Granted you dont want to have the drill set at the hammer setting, but that drill has more torque overall than one without the hammer setting

It’s worth a good laugh when you see someone trying to drill ice in hammer mode.

K-drill isn’t very efficient, but it shines in areas with crappy ice.I killed a set of Lazer blades years ago by drilling into ice with wind-blown sand.River ice is sometimes abrasive as it is from silt.

2 batteries will be way more then enough. You’re gonna love the kdrill if that’s all you’ll be drilling…and it’s better then the laser bit smirk

What size auger? I’d agree the 900 would be better but I say give the 700 a whirl especially if its the 6”. Just be smart about it.
