The job site I’m on is a wet clay mess. My kenworth is not a happy truck. Getting out on the morning should take a dozer to pull me out
November 19, 2024 at 7:23 am #2299941Ummm, might want to check the drought monitor again. Not even close.

GertyPosts: 377November 19, 2024 at 7:25 am #2299943Gim – that is dated the 14th. Will be interesting what it says as of today. We got almost 1.5″ in Mankato.
CaptainMuskyPosts: 23377November 19, 2024 at 7:30 am #2299945Yeah its been an absolute soaker here since about 4 oclock last night and all night and its still going. I havent checked the gauge yet, but there is a lot in there. I hadnt emptied it in a while and there was .8″ in it so I dumped that much out and put the rest in the big overflow. Will measure in a bit.
November 19, 2024 at 7:30 am #2299946Yes, but its still the most recent one available.
The new one every week comes out on Thursday mornings, and the cut off point is Tuesday at 8am. It will show some improvement. But its certainly not over by any means.
THPosts: 549November 19, 2024 at 7:49 am #2299952I would say by looking at water levels in the lake, it’s not over.
CaptainMuskyPosts: 23377November 19, 2024 at 7:49 am #2299953RIght around 2 inches here. We were considered moderate drought. by the time things are tallied after a week or so that is likely completely gone after this at least here anyway. Many areas reporting over 1″ as of midnight. Its still raining and seems to come in waves. Definitely welcomed and needed. Now the cooler weather will settle in after today.

Oh boy Reef! That will be an adventure.

My grandpa, sage philosopher and poet-warrior that he was, once famously called raking and bagging leaves, and I quote:
“The worst form of peasant labor on God’s Earth.”
He was right.
CaptainMuskyPosts: 23377November 19, 2024 at 8:08 am #2299966Yeah I dont bag leaves anymore either. When I did I just dumped them in the tree line at the back of my yard near the field. Now I have this mulching attachment on my tractor and it just pulverizes them so it looks like it was bagged.
November 19, 2024 at 8:15 am #2299968I mostly try to mulch mine too. There are a few spots where too many leaves accumulate and I have to rake/bag some though. Its good for the lawn to leave some mulched leaves on it. Just don’t leave a giant mat of unmulched leaves in one spot before the snow flies. That will kill the grass.
Dumping a few in the garden is an option too.

Very good point. Several years ago my leaves were taking their sweet time falling and I was working on them as I could and came down, but then we got a massive snowfall like over a foot and there were areas of real thick leaves now buried in snow. My lawn has never really recovered from that.

November 19, 2024 at 12:31 pm #23000415 day old drought monitor is pretty inaccurate the after a big rain system moves through.

I agree, but there isn’t a new one posted yet. So that’s what we use.
I can assure you that most of MN, WI, and surrounding states will indicate some varying level of drought. I’ll bet my mortgage on it.
James AlmquistPosts: 392November 19, 2024 at 4:19 pm #2300116From the rain we got last night we are still 3 1/2″ behind normal. Not sure if we are ever even close to normal anymore.
November 19, 2024 at 4:31 pm #2300122normal is now a moving target!!!!!
and unless we keep getting rains like this spring/early summer……there’s ALWAYS gonna be some sort of varying levels of drought!!!!!
alot of times my drink glass has drought issues!!!!!

That’s pretty accurate. Which is why it’s bone headed to say that the drought is over.
Digging out of a drought is also quite difficult to do in the winter after the ground freezes. Even a lot of snow doesn’t make much of a dent because it’s unable to penetrate frozen ground. The jury on that comes in the spring when the ground thaws and the rate at which the snow melts. Gradual melting is good, but a rapid one just runs into waterways, which does nothing for drought status.

November 21, 2024 at 8:15 am #2300462Updated drought monitor as of 8am. That includes most of the moisture that fell as rain on Monday night.
Significant improvements in the central portion of MN and WI.
But the drought is not over by any means.

Gitchi GummiPosts: 3140November 21, 2024 at 8:24 am #2300466one rain storm will never fully alleviate a drought unless its darn near a flood. the ground is so dry that a lot of it ends up just running off in these types of storms and not soaking into the ground.
November 21, 2024 at 8:27 am #2300468We could use two more storm systems like what just went through before frost really sets in (near my property). We were coming off a stretch of ~35 days with no measurable precipitation. One system dumping 1.5″ of rain at most took the edge off in our area.
CaptainMuskyPosts: 23377November 21, 2024 at 8:28 am #2300469This rain most certainly soaked in around here anyway. It was over several hours and not just a monsoon type rain that fell in 30 minutes. Now about an inch of wet snow on the ground, that will soak in too.
November 21, 2024 at 8:33 am #2300471We were coming off a stretch of ~35 days with no measurable precipitation. One system dumping 1.5″ of rain at most took the edge off in our area.
Exactly. Data proves this right in the drought monitor.
There is not much moisture in the form of rain on the horizon. There’s just brief chances of minimal snow because air temps are projected to fall next week. We will be in a drought until the spring when the ground begins to thaw.
CaptainMuskyPosts: 23377November 21, 2024 at 8:50 am #2300476Yeah the temp trending downward will cause the ground to begin to freeze and anything wet wont soak in pretty soon. So we will likely be locked in for the winter unless there is a warmup.
