Wednesday night a guy drove through my yard and ran over my mailbox. Last night local police man came to my house and said they found the guy who did it. He gave me a case number and a Progressive Insurance policy number to have it fixed. Do i just call any progressive insurance office and tell them what happened or what?

I’d call the Clinton’s. They’ll find this guy just hanging around.

Yep, sounds like the incident has already been filed with Progressive so your nearest agent should be able to look up the info with the case # the police provided you. I’m guessing you’ll liekly need to pay for the repairs out of pocket, then submit a receipt to Progressive for reimbursement.

I would just call your insurance guy and tell him. He can either tell you what to do or if he is really good he can handle everything for you. Be sure you get a quote to have the work done, even if you do it yourself.

I would call progressive and they may want you to get estimates to have it fixed and then send you a check

You have two options. Either work directly with Progressive – I’d just call the 1-800 claim #. I see 1-800-776-4737 listed. They will most likely have you go get a estimate and get it to them. In this situation they most likely will just pay you direct. The second option would be to file a claim with your insurance company and they will pay for the repair and then go through subrogation with progressive to recover their cost. If it was me and progressive is willing to work directly with you I’d process through them. If you run into any issues I’d just call your insurance agent.

File with Progressive first. 1. your homowners deductible is probably higher than the repair. 2. any claim you open does effect your future rates even if there is nothing paid. More than likely if things do not go well with Progressive, ie the guys policy was lapsed or something it will still be cheaper just to pay our of your own pocket.

I called progressive, lady was nice but said i needed to know the kids name and vehicle model which the popo did not give me. Called police station and they emailed me the report now i just have to call back. Now i feel bad they threw the book at the poor kid. Traffic collision with failure to report, careless driving, driving after suspension and 4th degree criminal damage to property. Wish he would have just knocked on door and said sorry but when he seen me and drove away kinda pissed me off.

YES. My old lady has a part time job that she gets paid for and a full time job ordering things from everywhere we get to pay for.

I wouldn’t feel too sorry for him if he was behind the wheel without a license. He was no angel to begin with.

I had a similar thing happen to me a number of years ago. The police contacted me in person. There was a police report. I submitted my “damages” for replacement. Never saw a penny.

It’s a mail box…..fix it yourself. It’s not worth your time and headache to try an recoup $50.

Save your receipts in case you magically get paid back, but I wouldn’t lose any sleep over it.

It would be totally different if he hit your house or a vehicle parked outside.

On a related note the same thing happened to me last summer, except the cops didn’t know who did it.

Actually didnt wreck the box itself. Have you seen the price of a 6×6 cedar post lately plus somehow the post and concrete need to be pulled out of the ground. With all the other framing an stuff to get back to what it was it will be at least 300 if i wait til spring and dig it up myself.

I agree with Smoker – there need to be consequences and personal ownership of your actions. Had a guy back into me at the intersection, didn’t even look. Got out and said, “your car is old and not worth anything anyway and you wont even notice the damage” ?! Had he even said “sorry I f ed’ up but to come out like that – I called the cops. I didn’t do anything, didn’t want a report, just to let him know that because he a D bag i was gonna inconvenience him – might make me one people like that just get on my nerves. Would have just driven away otherwise. People need to be responsible for what they do.

Off topic, but related story. I used to hunt pheasants with the maintenance supervisor for a county out in western MN. One of their contractor plow drivers had stickers made, a black silhouette of a mailbox and he started adding them to the door of his truck like a fighter pilot adds a shootdown tally to his plane.

It took a while before anyone noticed, but when they did and a picture hit Facebook, well, there was some citizen outrage alright. The county board got a little constituent feedback at the next meeting as well. The fact that it was not an approved county practice and the offending driver was a contractor didn’t hold any water.

The guy showed me some of the emails he got and no kidding, one email even called his mother bad names.

Odds are he avoided a DWI. He had his lic suspended for previous bad driving behavior. Most people are victims of their own bad decisions.

Some kids in my old neighborhood loved playing mailbox baseball. After about 3 humeruns I cemented a old dock pipe in the ground, slipped a cheap homemade wood sleeve and put it over the pipe then bored a hole in the bottom of a mailbox and slipped it on.

They never came back, that upset me more than losing the previous 3 boxes.

    Moral of the story?
Stick a new one in the ground.

Not sure where you live – but be careful if you use concrete on the new one. Most cities and counties have regulations on that. I know of a friend who’s mother loss control of a auto on slippery roads and hit a Mailbox that was concreted in to much and they had lawyers showing up like crazy telling them they would be willing to sue the homeowner for her injuries. She did not do so, but she could have and won a nice settlement. Same goes for a cemented dock pipe.

That was a fable used to set up the moral.
