Pat and I took vac. on monday so we could spend and extra day at Johnson lake. I went out to fish early AM. Was casting the dam for small mouth bass in about 4ft of water. Caught a couple of small ones. A few minutes later I was casting and snagged on the bottom. Used my trolling motor to go get the snag out. When I got over to where I was snagged the “snag” started to swim away.
Now keep in mind I am using an ultra lite rod and reel, with 3yr old, 6lb test, line on it. The reel is only about half full of line which means, about 60′ of line is on the reel. I have a small storm thin fin lure on that is only 2″ long with 2 small treble hooks on it.
Now for the rest of the story. I used my trolling motor to follow the “snag” around for 50 min. Imagine my surprise when I finally got the “snag” to the surface and it turned out to be a 43in long flathead catfish that weighted 34lb!!! So what do you do with a catfish that large when your net is a rubber net that is only 20″ in dia and about 8-10″ deep. I was lucky that I had taken my gaff from my old boat and put it in my new one. Used the gaff to lift the fish into the boat. Oh I forgot to mention, that only one hook from one of the small treble hooks was hooked right in the middle of the upper lip.
After I got the fish in the boat I notice the lure was laying on the bottom of the boat. Some where between gaffing the fish and pulling him into the boat the lure fell out.
Unfortunately Misty was my partner, and she’s not talking!! But I did have my camera along. Click here for pics.

    nice looking Flathead, Congrats..

what is probably much easier on the fish than gaffing, would be to put your hand in it’s mouth and grab the lower jaw, they are pretty easy to handle this way. you just have to watch out for any lures or hooks that might be inthere…
    Jack..
