the ice storm, did suck, we finally got power on sunday nite at 5 pm. the good news, elwood has been getting water since last week, it has risen about a ft. al…
I was there a weed and a half ago and it was damn depressing. I took a bunch of pictures and shared them with some of the other flat land anglers. Totally unbelievable what has happened to one of Nebraska’s top trophy lakes. Hopefully they can continue to put more water in than what leaks out.
Water has been going in since Friday night at about 11pm, and will continue until the last day of the year (at this time). I can definitely tell you that much.
hey Brian, how much do you think or know about the amount of water lost in Elwood to seepage through the dam? Is it worse than most of the other dams in the area?
To be honest with ya Jorg, I really don’t think it’s through the dam much at all. There’s no release point in the dam, so no water goes through it. I think it’s just the whole lake in general. That mud over there is like a big sponge, and it just seeps down is what I’m told. And everytime I get corrected from my source that works at Central (IT’S RECHARGE!!! Not Seepage!!! ). But ya, I think it’s just the whole bottom in that place. Hopefully we’ll have enough water in there to fish spring through summer, so you’ll definitely know where to find me. When it gets real hot that lake loses about 2′ a month. Right now, it’s losing about 6-8″ I would say, because it’s cold out and stuff. But I bet that lake is really soaking a lot of this water up right now, so I hope it stays around for a while.
Hope that you don’t plan on icefishing it this winter. That could really make for some fun ice.
Seriously, it’s about time that they put some water in the lake. It just burns me to watch all of the water running down the Platte at this time of year. I realize that the enviromentalists run this world; but they could cut the water in half and the ducks and geese would have plenty.
I didn’t fish Elwood at all this year because I was afraid that I couldn’t get my boat out if I got it in. Hopefully, next summer I will be able to find you……………….at Elwood.
I was over there today to see what was up with the water. It is coming in pretty good but most of the lake is still iced over and it looked like the water was still quite a ways from the bottom of the tempoary ramp.
Yup, I do think ice fishing it is probably going to be out of the question this year. That’s all right. I’ll definitely sacrifice that to get the Crestliner in there all spring and summer.
Last year I fished it real hard and caught lots of wipers and the most walleyes I’ve ever caught over there in one year, so I was over there a lot. I just hope they get enough water in it this time so that it’ll still be up to get the boat close to the water. The temp ramp really isn’t bad, as long as you don’t punch it in 4×4 when getting out. I had not one problem last year, and like I say, I was there a lot. This trailer has rollers too, so hopefully all I’ll do is get close and go from there. I do hope to see you there too!!!
This latest storm looks like it has dumped a bunch of moisture out there. Let’s hope it keeps coming. I really hate to say this but, I wouldn’t care if there wasn’t any more ice in Ne. this winter as long as the rain and snow keeps pounding us!!!
Found some safe ice today at Pibel, 60 miles north of GI on 281. Probably 5-6″ of good ice with a couple inches of frozen slush on top of that. Got a ‘gill fix there. A couple of dozen hand sized gills that are still swimming. Kind of sporatic bite. Not enough ice on Erickson to fish it.
the water is shut down at elwood, looks like around 5 ft. somebody has a johnboat duck blind stuck in the ice, or maybe its a new ice fishing hut. ?????? al….
Yup, water was shut off at Elwood on New Year’s Eve, at 9am. I’m told it was about an 8′ rise. Once I get a reliable vehicle that I can count on, I’ll go over and check it out!
seth. That duck blind boat was high and dry a couple of weeks ago when I last stopped there. Maybe they should have used the nice weather to get it out. Frozen in? The only good ice around!
Ya, we should mark that motor or something in case he ever tries to sell it. I’ve seen that thing frozen in the ice twice now, and you KNOW that ain’t good for it!!! Doesn’t seem like he cares about it too much, that’s for sure.
central.s web site showed about 5 ft rise at elwood. if they don,t put anymore water in elwood till spring, that boat might be on the bank again, . been told i have another grand kid coming this summer. i have 1 granddaughter 1/1/2 yrs ,claire, seth, 6 months ,next one in july, gonna have to get a bigger ranger, three grankids kids in a boat, that,s going to be interesting , and all bass fisherkids…. al…..
Congrats on the grandkids they are the greatest. I have two a boy and a girl. A fisherman and a ballerina. Hope to get the grandson to Elwood this summer and teach him to throw a few spinnerbaits to the bank and to run a couple of trolling boards. If he can run a 9.9 kicker that would be great, too.
The only problem with grandkids is that you spend more money on them than you did on your own kids. Thank God that Christmas comes only one time a year.
With all of the water that will come down the South Platte this spring from Colorado runoff, will Elwood get anymore of that water?
After they read this, they’ll pry be to afraid to go get it in fear of embarassment if someone saw them
