Pool 4 rookie here, looking to learn something new. I’m looking for some suggestions for a decent jigging/dragging rod and what line works best? I’m thinking some hi-vis 6 lb braid would suffice?

If you are usually out above freezing braid will work just fine. I have 10lb suffix on most of my reels now but have a problem with icing up below freezing. So I rigged two with mono for the winter. I like a 7′ ml fast action for most of my fishing.

I am not sure if I could use the same rod for jigging and dragging, for jigging I most always use a braid type line and for dragging I learnt from a very well known Pool 4 guide to use mono and he was dead on about that. My hookup rate was almost a 100 % when the fish hit, where with a braid I would miss quite a few.

    I jig with a 6’10″MLXF rod and drag with a 7’MLF rod.

I’ve used 7,2″ medium xtra fast and just got a 6’8″ medium xtra fast. Both supreme xt 6230 spooled with 8lb hi viz mono. I feel I get better hookups and mono is also a lot easier to break jogs off if fishing in snaggy areas.

For jigging I like a 5’9″ med extra fast.

For the price it’s hard to beat the Fenwick Walleye Elite Jigging Rod. They’re very popular in the guiding circles due to the price point vs. quality. Pairs nicely with a Abu Garcia Orra 2S30. I’ve had bad luck dragging with braided line and would highly recommend 6#-8# Hi Seas Grand Slam mono for that technique in less than 20′ of water. The line is low stretch and still is highly sensitive enough for jigging. Try it, you won’t be disappointed. I like the 6’6″ ML F action rod as I’m more likely to use a 1/16 oz jig than a 1/2. The rod easily handles the largest pike I’ve tangled with around here and use the same rod for panfish with 6# mono.

What Trumar said, in St. Croix Avid. Pitching, 7′ MF and braid on the jigging and pitching. Mono for dragging. waytogo

Depending on $$, my “split the difference” choice would be a 7’MLF and braid. The mono for dragging creates a little extra resistance and gives a slower, undulating action that braid and it’s quick response/no stretch won’t do…but if you can have only one, I’d stick with braid. MHO. Dang that $$ stuff anyway. flame

Another vote for the 610MLXF – The most versatile rod I have.
