Jigging Rap Rod recommendation

    Hey all,

I’ve seen countless videos and read countless times on what type of rod to use for jigging raps. (Vertical or Casting) I can’t quite seem to remember what the ideal rod is.

What do you use? Also, do you tie up to a leader?

I like medium with fast or extra fast action. Some like the Medium light but I just use mono and then a floro leader for it. As far as spinning or casting I think it is up the end-user as you are not bombing the lure out there. It is like rod length, I like 7 foot some like a little longer and some shorter. Be careful once you get the first on them it is all over, bank account going down buying a lot of jigging raps. I love to sharp shot eyes.

When you get used to your rod length, you get used to it. Personally I like a 6′ M rod fast action.

I use a MH Lamiglass “The Hammer”… I spool the reel with 10 pond MONO and run a swivel with a 18 inch leader of flouro or mono. Not sure the leader and swivel matter, but it makes me happy knowing I am doing everything possible to prevent line twist. If you must use braid I would suggest a M or even a ML rod. I like the forgiveness of mono on the hookset and while fighting fish. The lure is heavy and fish can throw the bait and hooks get ripped out during hookset with braid.

I run 6-9 MF with braid, no issues at all. You’re not really setting the hook, I’ve maybe felt one bump on a jigging rap. I snap jig and troll, so maybe if u were vertical fishing braid might be a factor. Usually when you snap, they’re hanging on there

St Croix 6’8” medium extra fast with mono is perfect. I use it for pitching jigs and saw Al Lindner recommend the same setup for jigging raps. Again, it’s perfect.

With jigging raps its been my experience while vertical jigging, as also mentioned by Craig, that the hits come on the fall and can be soft, so when the snap is made they’re just there. Very few hits I have realized on the actual up-snap. I use light braid with a small ball bearing swivel and have no twist issues. The fish don’t pay much attention to the swivel. I prefer a rod with a faster tip.

    Can’t help on casting.

I have watched many videos on this exact topic and their seems to be several schools of thought. just look to the differences presented on YouTube from these 3 very reputable sources. Keith Kavajecv, Al Linder, and Tom Boley.

Some similarities seem to be 1.)if using a ML rod, you can use braid and 2.)if you use a M rod, use mono. 3.)use a swivel to avoid twists

being I like my Extreme 6’10” MLXF the most and I generally have it spooled with a nonstretch line, I have used this the most. I have also used a MXF with mono. i seem to prefer the first set up, may be mind over matter though.

I made a rod for this this year and love it. It is such a fun way got catch fish. The rod is spinning 7’-3”, light, fast action. With the tip on this blank I can bomb jigging raps a long ways and cover more ground. The soft tip has saved me from ripping the lure out of a fish’s mouth and I fish it aggressively. Yet this blank has the backbone that will drag in a 36” pike with no problem. The great thing about jigging raps is it will catch everything from 3” perch to that pike.

I use St. Croix Mojo Bass 6’ 10” mlxf. It works great with braided line.

    I agree..

I was out fished by a guy one day using this same set up while I was running a 7 ft St Croix medium with a fast action. Must have been the rod whistling
