Man, my catch rate with these things suck this year. Same rod, same line, just popping off on me.

At least they make em bite!

Be sure your hooks aren’t bent out a bit Nick.

found some short shank gami treble’s that I’ve swapped out the standard treble and made a huge difference. Not sure of the exact model, I threw away the package.

Out of the box i change all my jigging rap hooks to Gamakatsu. i find that the vmc trebles that come on the raps are sticky sharp right away but loose their edge and are much easier to breaking.

Seems counter-intuitive – reducing the number of hooks on the lure – but cut off those back and front hooks and change the treble to larger Gami’s as suggested above. You’re hooking percentage will improve greatly.

Yikes, not sure on cutting off all the top hooks. Does sound like it may work though.

It’s been mentioned here before on bending in the front top hook.

We will see how it goes after another outing. Don’t want to knee jerk react to this but gets frustrating after more than a few.

If you like your results, keep doing what you’re doing.

If you don’t like your results, try something different.

Cutting off those front/rear hooks is the first thing I do to a new Jigging Rap because they are the last hook I would want to hook a big fish on. I have no problems with landing fish using a single, high quality treble. Ask yourself this: how many trebles do your jigging spoons have??

    Valid points.

You replace those with red hooks or stick with original?

Completely with your thought process on big fish, sub 20″ers which I’m sure I’ve had thus far no biggie.

The reason why I cut my front hooks off, is because I’ve seen fish that I pull up with the lure side ways in mouth having that hook preventing the lure from being engulfed. Fortunately these fished wouldn’t let go of lure and the treble is just barely hooking them.

There are times where the front hook is needed.

They’re clipping off the single hooks at the front and tail of the bait with a wire cutter. Then they’re replacing the treble hook with a size or two larger treble hook.

    The circled ones.

Unfortunately jigging raps are my least productive bait. Tried them many times with little success. They’re too heavy IMO. I prefer lighter more subtle presentations.

Munchy, if you haven’t already, try the Custom Jig & Spins Rotating Power Minnow. Not nearly as heavy as the Jigging Rap, falls much slower, looks more like a minnow than a real minnow, and both the line tie and hook hangar rotate, reducing line twist and leverage when fighting a fish. Make said modifications with hooks, fish it, then thank me later.

I haven’t had the greatest luck with these, to be honest. Lots of lookers and few takers.

Do you guys tip them with anything?

What are some tips for triggering strikes?

Drop it down the hole just a couple feet, and play around with it. Learn to visualize what’s going on, think many over do it.

Personally, 2-3 small strokes to get it going in a circle, then dead pause it to let it gather itself back center, then whack! Also very sharp, small strokes seem to trigger em.

Small strokes is rod tip going no more 2-3″, max. Lil goes a long way
