Jiggin Rap Bite

Anyone had a good jigging rap bite lately? Not looking for a lake, just curious if anyone has tried it.

Going out this weekend and the lake temp is mid to upper 70’s so I figured I would try a jiggin rap outing in several areas to see what we can find.

I haven’t been on a great jig rap bite yet this year. That being said, i have caught a few and i never hit the lake without one rigged and ready. They work year around in the right situations.

BTW, a buddy of mine uses Moonshines more than Jiggin Raps, says they are even better

Interesting. Does he have a theory why he thinks they are better?

    Additional question….

What speed are you guys going if you are trolling with it and snapping it?

IME moonshines are more productive in a casting/snapping back to the boat scenario and jig raps way out fish them vertically snapping on a specific piece of structure. I use both A LOT.

I agree with ajw. The reason I think the moonshines work better casting is because they will move left to right more (more erratic of a retrieve.)

If I’m towing them I usually go .5-.8mph. I would say go as fast as you can and still keep bottom contact.
I generally have had better luck pitching and retrieving them though.

This has been my experience as well. Even better is the Nils Master Jigging Shad. The qualities of the bait action that make the moonshine often better than the jigging rap when cast are magnified with the jigging shads. The wide flat sides makes a nice big half circle as it’s falling then it goes back the other way on the next stroke.

    Vertically over structure.
    From shore to deep water.
Outside of weed edges to deep water.
Never trolled them, didn’t know people did that.

In my opinion, I like a troll/cast approach if fishing with 2 guys. Bow guy casts towards structure (point, ledge, etc), and back guy trolls, jerking it along as you go.

    Great way to cover area

I’m sure it will end up the same way rippin raps worked out for me. Never caught anything on the, then up on LOTW hardwater fishing I knocked it out of the park. Hope it’s turns out the same with jiggin raps.

    EPG,

I was in the same shoes as you, never caught anything open water with them. Last fall I tried them on gull along the bottom of steep breaks, and stuck a 19, 20, and 28 within about an hour. Needless to say, I’m a believer!

I’ve never caught anything yet. Mainly vertical jigging on LOW open water. Catch fish on jig and shiner, move to jigging rap and catching stops. Others in the boat just keep catching and laughing at me.

    Don’t they work for vertical?

They have their place just like many other classics, which says alot EPG. But certainly not a do it all.

First thing I tie on hardwater, but open water maybe top 5 first thing I’m going to.

I’m interested now in the moonshines, gonna pick up a few

They catch dang near any species. I always have a rod with one tied on. If there is a lot of current, I tie on the biggest one I got and ALWAYS fish it vertically. Less current and little wind, I go with smaller sizes. Try just lifting your rod tip a foot or so in and wait, Fish almost always grab it on the fall. All it takes is one great day using them to make you a believer.

First of all, jigging it off the bar stool is quite unproductive if you want to catch fish jester

I have had pretty good luck just vertical jigging it in deeper water. See a fish, drop down, pull up hard then a controlled fall to the bottom. couple small jerks and repeat.

I don’t use them to cover a lot of water, but if you can move around with the trolling motor, mark a fish then drop on it, it works great.

He guides on Cass Lake and tourney fishes. Because of the zebra mussels, Cass is clear and you can see schools of walleye in 20′ of water. So he is all about using side imaging and casting to schools of fish. If you sit on top of them or drive next to them, they will spook.

Your not the only one I never catch anything on them so I don’t have confidence. Maybe I will have to re look at my tactic and try again. What sizes do you guys use. Big or small

For me the right situation to try a jig rap would be any time I’m fishing a clean bottom in more than 10ft of water. Sand or gravel basically.

I have all 3 sizes and I’ve had my best luck on the 7’s and 5’s. I haven’t had as much success with the large 9’s.
