The walleye fishing has been pretty good this past week. I have been out 5 of the last 7 days and managed limits each day with the exception of Friday when we were one short and got run off the lake by a storm at 10:00 am. Spot tails showed back up at the bait shop and I am using them on a jig. I have been fishing less then 10ft and in weeds. Summer patterns are in swing right now and walleyes on the feed. I don’t know how much longer I will be jigging but these fish will take a leech or crawler on a plain hook bait rig also. I know many have went to other presentations but if you know how to work a jig in the weeds you should be able to find some walleyes. Another way to attack these weed fish is a slip bobber and a leech. This works great if the fish are a bit concentrated. If you can find one you should be able to find more.

Do you have a favorite type of jig when fishing in the weeds?

I don’t, I just use an 1/8 round head. I would guess there are better jigs for weed fishing though. However I don’t drag a jig and try to keep it up out of the weeds.

Thanks for the update Tom. I’ll be traveling from Indiana to Leech staying at a resort in Steamboat Bay on July 8th through the 16th. My hope is to pattern some Walleye and Pike fishing. Was thinking about crawlers/leeches & bobbers in the weeds, as well as dragging jigs around the edges of weeds and dropoffs (if I can find them). Maybe some rapalas, too.

Well the shiners were starting to die quickly so I have made the switch to rigs with leeches and crawlers for the most part. The good news is they work just as well. You will have lots of opportunity near your location for all you mentioned.
