A little strange that a TV host didn’t even have a scale in his boat. Regardless, a replica is called for on this one.

Have you seen any of the IDO episodes where they forget a net? It happens.

Yes, and that is odd too.

Nice fish, we catch several over 30 in my boat each year and I have never carried a scale, don’t really care about that much, nice fish is a nice fish, rake a pic and move on.

That’s awesome. I’m still in the hunt for over 30 club.

Really happy for him, what a fish. Also that’s only 2 years after the latest record in the same area. I grew up there and never remember hearing about fish this big and this often over the years. They system must be doing really well for big’uns

Best big fish pic I’ve seen to date was from IDO years ago, think it was a prespawn tank that was one of Holst’s guide customers? Anyways it was shot from above, kind of down onto the guy at an angle and had everything you needed to compare it and really get a hold of it’s actual size. Absolute monster.

I get crap for it everytime but I don’t care, this pig of a fish held out looks like any other 26-29″ fish that’s held out. Don’t doubt the size one bit, looks great, fantastic catch, but noone can tell me they get a true feel for the hugeness of this fish. I think it’s unfair to the angler and unfair to the fish quite frankly not being able to put this once in a lifetime catch into perspective. Would’ve been awesome to see right next to him, big ol belly on belly action!!

    Congrats to Jason.

Yes Sir…i catch dozens of 30 plus every year, i put the tape on them for length and back they go. I do carry a scale and an old net bag if i really wanted to weigh one

I started carrying a seamstress tape with to measure girth, plus it goes longer then my 32″ bump board in case I have to worry about that problem in my lifetime.

Helleva fish though, bigger than any I have seen by far

Jason seems like a really stand up guy. I’ve had quite a few conversations with him online and in person and always seems happy to talk shop and give any tips he can. Always steers me in the right direction when I go out to Devils Lake. Releasing a potential state record because you weren’t 100% sure is pretty admirable in my book.

Depending on what the regulation is in North Dakota, but in many states placing a fish in your live well would be considered “reducing it to your possession” and it would then be a violation of the regulation to release it at a later time.

Seems he made the right decision under the circumstances.

Awesome fish for an awesome ambassador of our sport. Jason seems like a class act, nice to see he released it too.

Agree with a couple comments above though, no need to hold it soooooo far out from his body. I know its super common these days, but I always cringe a little when its over done.

For the fact he still after all these years runs the tribute to Tony Dean at the end of his show tells me he is a class act. Add in the release of this fish and it seals the deal. applause

That is an awesome fish. Class act returning it to fight again.

Also a friend of mine caught 3 over 14.5 lbs in Dec. 2018 from Bay of Quinte and none of them were over 31 inches. So over 16 lbs was quite possible with Jason’s fish.

What a fish, good for him. Jason is a super nice guy. Met him a couple times fishing out at Devil’s quite a few years ago when we stayed houses out of woodland. I can’t remember if they were his houses or Woodlands but he brought our group to the shacks both years. Guy deffinetely knows how to fish.
