    Back in the day when no one gave a hoot, the AFL and NFL came up with this Super Bowl idea.
    Be cause the NFL had leverage over the younger less influential AFL they decided to name it the Lombardi Trophy.
    Who knows why the would name it after V-Lombardi, most likely because he was the only name that was most agreeable to both sides who did not want the Trophy named after a more influential member of Either league at that time.
    So they compromise and come up with the Lombardi Trophy.
    So I think it’s time to rename the Super Bowl trophy to a more appropriate Symbol of the NFL.

    If you were to rename the Trophy after a Player/Coach/Owner as the NFL league Representative who would you suggest.

    # 1 choice IMHO would be Pat Tillman

    Seriously? Nothing could be further from the current image of the NFL.

    Great idea! Let’s also start giving the Master’s Champion an orange jacket while we’re at it! And an elaborate garland made of tulips for the winner of the Kentucky Derby! I don’t know why nobody thought of this before jester

    The trophy was named in 1970 after Lombardi died of cancer, to honor the man who was, at that time, the most successful and influential figure in the history of the league. You don’t just discard 47 years of history.

    No i think you are wrong. I don’t think it became the Lombardi trophy for several years after the first Super Bowl.
    I will admit i could be wrong, i didn’t research it. But other then you trying to get the Packer fans out of their funk i see no need to discuss it.

    Ok Drop Tillman, if they need to name it after a coach lets call it, The Bill Cup Second only to the Stanley Cup.

    But it refers to the Two best coaches in NFL History.
    Bill Belicich and Bill Walsh.

    Only in Sconnie,
    Was that 7 or 8 decades ago? When all the players were overweight, Caucasian, beer drinking, part time Profession players.

    Times have changed, there are far to many coaches that have achieved much more than Sconnies favorite Slow Pitch softball coach since then.

    Not according to stats…….Walsh, winning 609%…..Belichick(proper spelling)678%

    The men who made the NFL what it is today…..
    A dam bunch better than some wife-kid beating,overpaid,protesting “all me” players of today……
    By the way…..did you know Lombardi was a key in the total integration of blacks into football?

    Meh.
    Belichick is great, no doubt. However, rings:season and rings:playoff goes to Lombardi and it isn’t even close…

    Lombardi (head coach: GBP, WAS)
    = 5 championships in 10 seasons (.500)
    = 5 championships in 6 playoff appearances (.833)

    Belichick (head coach: CLE, NEP)
    = 5 championships in 22 seasons (.227)
    = 5 championships in 15 playoff appearances (.333)

    For reference there were 8 teams in the league when the supposed greatest coach won the ships. Then i believe the league expanded after his passing. Bill had to contend against a league of 32. I give Vince credit for getting it done but to win a ship these days is considerably harder. One thing that is a constant for success is either a franchise qb or a suffocating D.

    ships? as in Viking ships? no, those guys never won any regardless of the number of teams in the league. ;-)

    Sum derned facts on Lombardi’s championship years:
    1961 = 14 teams
    1962 = 14 teams
    1965 = 14 teams
    (AFL-NFL Merger)
    1966 = 24 teams
    1967 = 25 teams

    Different times for sure, though I’d suggest that the bigger challenge to maintaining greatness today isn’t a larger league but rather the impact of free agency. Every year the best teams get ransacked of their free-agent stars by the over-paying Houston’s and Washington’s of the league.
    If you just look at records since free agency hit in 1992, a few teams stand out above the rest: Pittsburgh, Dallas, New England, and Green Bay. I’d offer that it’s because of 2 big factors: a) having a HoF caliber QB and b) their organization is managed better than other teams when it comes to getting/retaining those complementary players.

    JUst for reference grin
