We have an outbreak of a respiratory virus. So the first thing millions of Americans think of is, Oh my, how will I wipe my @ss?

And so they go and hoard TP. Ok, it’s not nice to call them retards so I won’t.

What a bunch of retreads. America has more to fear from rampant stupidity than it has from COVID. The latter will go away.

    Grouse

Retreads… rotflol I remember that “coin” commonly used years ago. Maybe it’s time for a come back?

Maybe some of you knew this already but I discovered last night it’s not just us “stupid” Americans hoarding TP, but in fact worldwide too. Humorous posts on FB from Japan, Australia, New Zealand, UK, Spain…etc.

Why are retail establishments not limiting what people buy for crying out loud?

It’s not really up to retail establishments to control that, although some have tried. Ultimately it would be up to the government to step in and start rationing, like stamps they distributed during WW2.

I just picked up my venison scrap from the processor, 60 lbs of ground italian. I should be all set for food and I got a ton of old socks if we run out of TP.

Not true retail stores limit stuff all the time. All they need to do is discount the price by a penny from regular price and they can say limit 2 per customer. Don’t think they even have to lower the price but that’s when you see it done.

This was an eye opening article for me. As someone mentioned earlier, China’s early decision to completely shut down some of their cities probably saved many lives.

    https://medium.com/@tomaspueyo/coronavirus-act-today-or-people-will-die-f4d3d9cd99ca

It’s long, but does a good job explaining the impact of that decision. Italy made no such decision and they are F’d right now.

And whoever made the unbelievably ignorant comment about it being ‘universal health care’ in Italy resulting in that situation, go pound sand, you’re an idiot, please don’t reproduce.

If there are only 100,000 ventilators and 1,000,000 people need ventilators, it doesn’t matter what health system you have.

    Italy is F’ed?

1000 people dead from a seasonal flu would be normal, name it Corona and it’s end of the world.

    One more small stat….

5 yr study IN Italy, 2013-2017, 68000 flu deaths. Divide that by years, divide by months, how many is that? How does that compare to this beer virus? What would these hospital systems look like if the sheep of the world weren’t scared $hitless and overburdening these systems just remained calm?

Thanks media, thanks sheep for making this a $hitshow.

But posts like Matt’s although I’m sure he firmly believes what he posted that once it’s posted it needs to be corrected.

Fair enough. Reviewing the CDC budgets, it’s pretty clear that the line item for GHS was increased. It’s worth noting that that budget is dwarfed by the overall (and separate) budget for public health preparedness and response. A big chubk of that (600M+ for the strategic national stockpile – basicly managing our stocks of emergency medical supplies.) was moved away from CDC to the HHS ASPR in 2018 (maybe why the positions were eliminated). And overall funding for emergency health responses (between CDC and ASPR), while probably still insufficient, has been flat to rising the last few years.

The President’s 2020 budget request represented a 1.2+ billion decrease from 2019 (including a cut to GHS spending), while the 2020 operating plan has the increase mentioned above.

I do stand by my strong disagreement with the president’s handling of the situation. Starting with his ridiculous statement that “We have it totally under control”, and continuing with his ridiculous and dangerous continued downselling of the hazards involved. sSince we’re posting factcheck links

Very true. I think its obvious that we don’t want to be Italy in the next few weeks and hopefully the social distancing, better hygene practice, and cancelling of large events with lots of people helps mitigate that. Realize too that Italy has a large portion of their population as older people, which obviously means they are considered “higher risk” than the general population.

It is way past the point of pointing the finger and blaming one side or the other. This country is divided enough. We need to come together and work threw this like 911. Non of the bitching by conservatives or liberals will make this go away. This should not be a political issue. I might be in a dream world but only working together will stop this and bring us together again, now back to fishing.

I firmly believe that is what most of us are trying to do. It become difficult when the extreme liberals bash every single thing the white house does. The guy could cure cancer tomorrow and they would pee on him for it. To the far left I would say: get over it. he won the election and all of your whining will likely get you another 4 years of it.

China is also a communist country with authoritarian control. Very few countries can lock down cities as complete and effective as they can. Have you seen the satellite images of their reduced pollution during the lockdown?

Having said that, I am glad we are taking steps here in the US to stop large gatherings, including postponing most all sports and other big venues. Hopefully we can get ahead of the curve and slow this thing down.

LOL. your attempt to affirm people are trying to come together starts off with blaming liberals and bashing one side lol. maybe you should get over it.

to critters statement yes we should come together, left and right. don’t see it happening but this is a situation that affects us all. I think ill hit the ice this weekend and bring a bottle of whiskey. will be good to unplug for a while

While that may be true I think you’re missing the point. If retailers felt they were in a position where they needed to control or ration the sale of TP, clearly they have not done that as we’re seeing more and more empty shelves.

Why do you think that is?

As I stated before…”It’s not really up to retail establishments to control that” choosing instead to let TP sales continue in a free market.

My opinion is still that some kind of government involvement would have to happen before all the retailers agree to limit or ration sales.

Plenty of level-minded moderates and honest conservatives can see that the president’s response (or lack of, early on) to this crisis has put us in a worse position than was inevitable. Criticizing the president on this issue doesn’t make you an extreme liberal, it makes you a reasonable human being.

This thread was a great reminder why I come here less and less. I literally gained absolutely nothing. I want my 10 minutes back. Later dudes.

Stop criticizing every single thing he does, and maybe that group I am referring to will gain some respect back.

And BTW, do you not consider stopping all flights from China (amid immense blowback) doing anything??

Pricing and quantity buying controls are set by corporate in a normal situation which this is. Stores are happy to let the panicked cattle buy as much tp as they want at full price. This isn’t a national emergency for another 20 minutes or so when Trump will say it is. Then things are different. Then the government can ration water sales, gas sales food sales etc. as they deem fit and retailers will have to take instructions from the gov.

    In essence we agree! waytogo

I think it’s important to keep some perspective, there have been 40 deaths total in the US thus far. That’s a bad weekend in Chicago. Whether you think the gov’t has done enough or not enough preventative action, it is still a pretty limited threat in the states and MN in particular at this point and we should have a better idea how serious it will be in a week.
