It shouldn't be this hard to buy off a Web forum.

Found an item on another site I want to buy. Took the seller over a week to get back to me. Now is saying he will only accept paypal as a gift, check, or money order. Claims he’s been burned in the past. I explained that I would cover his paypal fees but that a normal paypal transaction is the only way to offer some security for us both. Sounds like he is not going to budge. Sorry for the rant but it should not be this difficult.

It’s amazing how hard you have to work to buy stuff from people some times. Maybe his wife is making him sell whatever it is and he is stalling. smirk

Unless he is a regular to that forum with an upstanding reputation, it sounds like a scam.

I know of a couple forums that warn highly against doing business with PayPal gift.

It’s an I pilot unit.I found the guy on Facebook and he appears to be an upstanding guy but I won’t budge on ever sending paypal ad a gift.

Hell no, it’s not a gift so that wouldn’t be anything other than sending the guy free money. Not a chance I would do it.

How far away is the guy from you? Is it possible to meet him face to face.

yah, i agree on the PP Gift transfer. Somethings wrong otherwise, but it might just be someone who is not experienced on EFT…

Move on. He’s been burned in the past. Probably has daddy issues. Sounds like he has a lot of baggage. Move on, don’t get sucked in.

Oh wait, are we talking about a transaction or a girl?

    John,
I have been burned by a buyer in the past & will only sell via USPS MO. Junk belongs in the garbage & I will not sell someone else any item with issues. Electronics can be a real touchy buy or sell for that matter. You sell an item that is fine & the buyer screws up the wiring & fries it……then claims you sold him junk. Now where are you as a seller if you sold it via paypal & get a charge back? A new unit will have a factory warranty & any retailer would be glad to sell to you. The warranty will have a value should you need it.

Send him a check or go buy a buy a new one. If your worried about needing buyers protection you shouldn’t be buying used stuff sight unseen from strangers

Yeah I’m not going though with it. He’s in Indiana so we can’t meet. He told me that someone else recently backed out also. Wonder if it’s for the same thing

With electronics, especially, I’d inspect the item first before purchasing. PayPal gift payment seems sketchy to me. The safest way to receive items is to use the pay after delivery option PayPal offers.

You’d think PayPal or other online payment services could integrate with couriers like the USPS, ups and FedEx and make the payment based on the tracking number and when it is delivered.

Then again, the seller could ship a pair of used socks.

I would tell him to list it on e-bay. If he is not willing to do that, I would pass it by.

I live in north central MN without internet shopping I would be lost. With any online purchase you have to be willing to take a hit up to the level of your purchase value. If not don’t buy it.

MOST people out there are honest, I have negotiated sight unseen purchases off off Craigslist after seeing a couple photos, and had the item mailed to me after I have prepaid with a personal check.

Someday I may get burned but I haven’t yet. If I do it would not be for an Item above my threshold of pain.

If the deal is to good to be true, it probably is. But I hardly ever pay more that 50% of the retail price.

I purchased an I-pilot Link for my Power Drive out of Canada off of e-bay for a great price. I was the only bidder. Other must of been afraid of the international shipping. I worked just fine, maybe I was lucky.

Bidding and Negotiating purchases is not for everyone. Good Luck.

It’s just unfortunate that we all have to deal with the scum of the earth when either we are buying or selling something. People get screwed over both ways and get gun shy on the risks.

If the guy is so worried over the 3% paypal fee or whatever it is, he should have considered it in his price. Just like any retail transaction where a credit card is potential mreans of payment, the retailers have that cost of service calculated into their overhead and profit margins.

I follow my gut. If I get a feeling that something is too good to be true, or the seller/buyer is shady, no deal and I look elsewhere

Nice option but it requires bank account info. Paypal wants that bank info… I prefer to keep my direct bank info to myself and use credit card for Paypal.

no one is being forced to buy anything, so why try to force the seller to behave a certain way?

i sell lots of fishing gear via a few buy/sell groups on Facebook. when i post the ad, i list “PayPal as Friends/Family only.” nope, i’m not taking money orders, i’m not taking checks, and i’m not paying any fees. i want my full amount paid immediately and then i’ll mail out the stuff. if someone doesn’t like that process, or doesn’t trust me to ship it, don’t try to buy it. simple.

i also buy lots of gear online in the same way, using PayPal Friends/Family almost exclusively. i haven’t been burned, and i figure that if i can’t afford for the item to get “lost” in the mail, i can’t afford to buy it in the first place. if i’m buying something expensive enough that i need some kind of assurance, i buy it new from a store or else insist on meeting in person and seeing the item before handing over the cash.

don’t mean to sound harsh, just trying to offer some real perspective about possible reasons sellers like me insist on using the fee-free PayPal options.

In my opinion if I offer to cover paypal fees, which I will always do if asked there is in my mind zero reason, other than the seller being deceitful, that they would not accept this method. Really it is the standard of online payment methods.

I had the total opposite experience last week. I bought a rod online from a guy and said I would send the paypal on Monday and the rod came on Friday before I had even paid him.
