just went out to the garage and my batteries are dead , both of them and one is definitely HOT to the touch, Have them on a minn kota maintainer and wired correctly . have had no issues in the past. Could it be the maintainer is haywire or would a battery be causing the overheat to both making the charger work harder?? new charger this year, new deep cycle this year, older starting battery .

in my experience,if a battery is hot after being on a charger,it will also smell sulphated, and it will be bubbling around the vent or caps, this means the battery is shorted internally and is junk.
an identical thing can happen when the charger is bad and overcharging,or the auto shut off has failed to recognize that the battery is charged and keeps on charging, this to will ruin a battery(s).
take the charger to a electrical repair shop and have it tested, and have someone test both batteries.
you may find that one junk battery has fried the charger, and it in turn fried the other battery,I have had this happen with small maintainers twice,no fun,and expensive!!
I went and bought an onboard charger and havent had any issues since, but, nothing is perfect, and being man made,I will bet in time it will fail also, but five years later,it is still going strong.

Potentially a couple issues here – the ccharger took a dump and didn’t step down to a trickle charge or you had a battery cell that is fried…or both.

We can guess all we want on here, but you’ll need to do a few tests to see what is really wrong.

1st, isolate the batteries and the charger. Test the batteries or take them to someone with a good load tester to see if any of them fail.

2nd, place the terminals of each bank independently on a known to be good and fully charged battery. If you can get your hands on a higher end fluke tester, you can put it in line between the battery and charger to see what voltage/amps your passing through.

Usually if a battery get extremely hot, its signs of a fried cell and often a seal in the case will leak. Proceed with cautiuon

thanks , they are both under warranty so I think I will return both for exchange and buy a new starter battery too. save me time and issues in the future, they also did smell but no seepage at this time ,

2 buddies just had to replace their MinnKota charger in the last few weeks. One was 3 years old, the other new last year. The one year old one also took out the batteries. It just kept charging.
