Couple tree rats didn’t die right away from the Daisy 880, not a fan. It’s headshot or nothing with this gun. Nice lil gun and accurate as heck but need more power. Manual says 660fps with pellet

Anyone in the twin cities got one they want to sell or has cheaper recommendations?

    Appreciate it.

Crosman Vantage NP. Literally just dropped one of the feeder 15 minutes ago.

Might want to try heavier pellets. I shoot the heaviest “magnum” pellets I could find.

What would you consider to be heavy, my red gammo is 7.8g each.

These are what I have had luck with. Your Daisy might not push them fast enough, though.

If you have a pump or bolt 22, try some sub-sonic ammo. Not much more noise than a pellet gun.

I feel once you jump up to actual ammo, if the cops ever showed up it takes on another level of danger. Some dude plinking with a pellet, it happens, some guy firing .22 rounds don’t sound good.

I have less than 40′ to my garage(backstop) from the BR window. Move the security cam over when I don’t want to get up and look all the time. Got 5 today so good start. A better pellet gun I sure think will do the trick.

Gammo Whisper 1300, 177 cal red-tipped pellets, take off the scope that comes with it, put on any scope you want, I have an old Herters 2 3/4 power on mine it’s a high power rifle scope. I can hit a golf ball at 30yards and killed squirrels at 40 yards. The set up is the cats a s s. True story the day before I got mine, I counted 6 in the small maple, 8 in the swamp maple out front, The Herd has been thinned down! DK.

Gamo makes an accurate pellet rifle. Mine can consistently drop streaked Gophers at 35 yards with ease and some practice.

A Ruger Charger .22 (comes with threaded barrel) and a supressor would be the ultimate choice.

That wouldn’t be no fun Andy grin

Saw my first death dance today. Have watched rat YouTube videos where they do the bounce and roll but it’s way better in person. Backyard looks like ww3 but well worth it.

If those plastic tipped pellets are alloy pellets they are too light to do the job. They are made for velocity. Try some regular all lead pellets before you do anything else.

Going to a high powered air rifle may not be a good answer. There is significantly more noise and ricochets can be a big problem.

I’ve whacked plenty of squirrels with my 880. Try some regular pellets before you do anything else.

They are not alloys grouse. Shot the regular pellets one would buy and was frustrated with the inconsistency. Don’t feel like combing thru 10 pellets to find a good one. These are all good to go out the can.

What kind do you guys prefer as far as tips? I’ll certainly try more pellets to avoid a gun purchase. Hollow point, round tip, pointed tip, copper tip, the list goes on….

These squirrels are freaking sumo sized. What shape is best for penetrating fatties? laugh

    Appreciate the help fellas

As long as you’re not worried about your cholesterol, start the fire and find a stick.

Those red-tipped pellets kills squirrels dead, as dead can get. I shoot them while they are in the trees, ricochets not too worried about it. “Each to his own”, when you hit em in the head, they drop like a rock. The red tip is polymer ,the base is lead. 8 grains in a 177 cal. I will say this the set I use, is not a whisperer, but I wack them from an open window.

They make a .22 cal “fire” pellet too. I have .177 and .22 cal air rifles that shoot these red tipped devils very accurately and at 50 yards crows and squirrels both cease existing when hit anywhere north of the paunch.

On another note……I read an article where a guy used a barrel from an air rifle and threaded it then screwed it into a worn out 209 primer breech plug for a muzzle loader. The barrel fit directly ahead of the primer pocket so a pellet could be loaded from the primer pocket. Using a standard 209 primer only the velocities being gotten were crazy fast. The pellets shot super accurate and since pellets are very soft lead when that pellet hit a critter it flat out blew up. I have some breech plugs for my Optima Pistol that are shot out from using the 209 powder and I’ve kept for converting to vent liners for that powder’s use but will try this in the pistol. I can always find a scrap air rifle with a bored barrel, not rolled metal. The pistol has a 2X7 scope on it and is super accurate. Maybe just found a way to expand my continuing quest good for pistol control….and keep the vermin in check. I can shoot from inside the garage on many of the places where the critters pester but like Beads suggests it probably best not to be in the yard with it plinking away.

Last night I really tuned in the gun. Foolishly i only tuned it using 7 pumps initially, been using 9 now. Bit disappointed it is fairly inconsistent now. Shooting from essentially a bench downstairs to 38′ and it won’t keep a half dollar. 7 pumps I was easily plinking Shopkins all day.

These newer 880s are all plastic and not made like they use to be according to some pellet forums I was reading. Still gonna give er a go today.

I think I agree grouse I may not need more power but the accuracy I sure need. Could just be my newb butt learning how to shoot anything too!

I have a gamo .22 whisper. It took me about 500 rounds before I was happy with the accuracy. I shoot crossman 14.3 grain hollow point pellets. Its deadly on squirrels and birds.

My only complaint is that it doesn’t have iron sights and the scope it came with is crap, so it took some time to dial it in.

Nick I may still have my 90s era 880 laying around at my folks place. I’ll ask, if I do I’d be happy to let you have it til you get the issue under control. We used to see who could pump it up the most and it was still darn accurate. Got into my share of trouble with that thing.

Appreciate the offer Adam. Went 2-2 today with headshots so its doing okay. Put the baitpile closer to house.

I wouldn’t mind dropping a lil dough on a nicer gun and scope. This problem I fear isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Ongoing battles require proper equipment.
It’s really an investment for the house right?! toast

Hear that. Just be careful with the neighbors. Crazy old bird lady next door pitched a fit when my kid was shooting the air soft in our yard. Need a higher fence on that side of the yard.

A suppressor will help keep the noise down. Mine sounds like someone opening a beer or pop can when I shoot.

Neighbors are all completely on board. To the south are huge gardeners who have been having their stuff torn up for years and bird feeders destroyed. And to the north is just as cool.

Catmando, my first order of business was a small 2″x3″ cut in the screen window. Certainly a good winter hobby since everyone has their windows closed. Other than blood sprayed all over the snow one would barely know what’s happening. grin

Need to go throw the bread out for today. toast

We have issues with squirrels in my neighborhood as well. The best thing I have found to help control the situation is one of those cage traps. Got one from menards for about $20 or so. I have a Crosman Benjamin that is dialed in to hit a quarter at 20 yards, but that trap has been the best and easiest squirrel control I have found. Not as fun as the air gun but highly effective.
Also, check out H and N, they make some pretty solid pellets. I got a “Hunting Sampler”, and did some target shooting to figure out which ones shot best thru my air rifle. Was interesting to see how some pellets shot so tight vs other. Heavier pellets seemed to be the most accurate with my gun. The pellets that have the worst groupings can still be used in removing squirrels from the trap. Happy hunting!

Is there bait that is catproof? Neighbor lady has a cat that she calls in off the streets to eat every day. Idk what’s going on there but pretty sure she’d have a $hitshow if she heard some meowing coming from a cage.

Cats aren’t too likely to be drawn to corn or bread in a cage trap. If one is, check for a collar and get the info off it and politely remind the owner they need to keep the cat on their property without mentioning the trap. If its a feral cat, take it out in the country and release it. OR.
